Children's Day and annual day 2026: a school content plan that feeds admissions

Children's Day is Saturday 14 November 2026, six days after Diwali, and most schools hold annual day in late November or December. Fix the dates and parents' permission by mid-October, shoot rehearsals before the Diwali break, cover both days properly, and cut the footage into admission content for the new session.

Most schools in Kumaon have the same two videos from last year's annual day. One is two hours long, shot from the back row on a parent's phone. The other is a slideshow of photos with a film song on it. Neither one helps a parent who is deciding where to send their child next year.

This year the calendar is tight. Dussehra is on 20 October, Diwali on 8 November, and Children's Day falls on the Saturday right after. If a school wants good footage from both days, the planning has to happen in the next two weeks.

01Who should plan for Children's Day and annual day now?

This plan is for anyone whose customers are parents:

  • CBSE, ICSE and state board schools with an annual function or sports day in November or December.
  • Play schools and pre-schools, where Children's Day is often the biggest event of the term.
  • Coaching centres that hold a felicitation or orientation day before the board exam months.
  • Dance, music, art and sports academies with a showcase or annual meet.
  • Bakeries, toy shops and kids' clothing stores near schools, for Children's Day orders.

The first four matter most. For them, these two days are the only time in the year when every parent is in one place, watching what the school actually does. That is the content a new parent wants to see before admission season opens.

02Why is annual day your best admission content?

Parents choosing a school do not trust posters. Every school's poster says qualified teachers, smart classes and all-round development. What parents trust is seeing real children on a real stage, teachers they might meet, and a principal who speaks well.

Annual day gives you all of that in one evening. The confidence of a Class 2 child at the mic. The discipline of a march past. The care in the costumes. A short, well-cut reel of that tells a parent more than a page of claims.

We have seen this with the schools and institutes we work with. For Jain Global School we shot their Harela planting day live, as it happened. For Aakash Institute we put the centre head on camera for admissions. The common thread is real people from the institution, not stock images. Our school page has more on how admission content works: School Marketing Agency in Rudrapur for Admissions.

03What should a school do each week from now?

Here is the plan, working back from Children's Day and a typical annual day. Move the later rows if your annual day is in December.

WhenWhat to doWhat to post
2 to 10 OctoberFix both dates. Decide who will shoot. Send the photo permission note to parents.Nothing yet, or a 'save the date' story.
12 to 19 OctoberRehearsals start. Shoot a few short clips of practice, costumes and teachers at work. One rehearsal reel a week.
20 October, DussehraMost schools break for a day or two. Edit what you have.A festival greeting with real children, not stock art.
21 October to 6 NovemberShoot the main rehearsals. Record short interviews with two or three teachers.Countdown reels and teacher clips.
8 November, Diwali breakSchools close. Edit the Children's Day teaser.A Diwali greeting from the school.
14 November, Children's DayShoot the day: teachers performing for children, games, the Bal Mela if you hold one.A same-day highlight reel and photos by evening.
Late November to December, annual dayCover the full programme with proper sound.A short highlight within a day or two, then the full show.
After annual dayCut admission reels, update Google photos and the website.Admission content for the new session.

04What should you shoot on Children's Day and annual day?

Write the shot list before the day. On the day nobody has time to think. Here is what we put on ours:

  • Wide shots of the full stage and the full audience, to show the scale.
  • Close-ups of children's faces during their own performance, from the side of the stage.
  • Parents' reactions in the front rows, with permission.
  • The principal's speech, recorded with a separate mic, not from the hall speakers.
  • Two or three teachers saying one line each about what the children worked on.
  • Backstage moments: make-up, nervous waiting, teachers adjusting costumes.
  • On Children's Day, teachers performing for the children. Parents share this more than anything.

Shoot everything vertical for reels, and the full programme horizontal for the record. If you are not sure whether a phone will do, our post on phones and videographers explains the trade-off: Can I shoot reels on my phone, or should I hire a videographer?.

05How do you handle children's photos and parents' permission?

This is the step schools skip, and the one that causes trouble later. A parent who did not want their child online sees them in an ad. Now the school has an angry parent and a reel to take down.

Keep it simple:

  • Send a short written permission note to parents before rehearsals start, in Hindi and English.
  • Keep a list of the children whose parents said no, and give it to whoever is shooting and editing.
  • Never put a child's full name, class and section on screen together.
  • Use only the children whose parents agreed in anything you run as a paid ad.
  • Share the full programme with parents through the class WhatsApp group, not as a public post.

Many schools already ask for this permission in the admission form. Check what yours says, and whether it covers ads as well as posts. If you are unsure about the legal side, ask your own adviser. Our job is the content, and we work to whatever your school's policy allows.

06What mistakes do schools make with these two days?

  • Only one person shooting, from the back of the hall, so every child is a dot.
  • Relying on the hall speakers, so the speech and songs are hard to hear on a phone.
  • Posting the highlight three weeks later, when parents have already shared their own clips.
  • Uploading only the two-hour video, which nobody outside the school watches.
  • Showing only the top performers, so most parents never see their own child.
  • Heavy files that will not play in the hills, where many parents and grandparents are on patchy data.

The last one matters in Kumaon. A short vertical clip, compressed for WhatsApp, travels further than a long video on YouTube. Grandparents in Almora or Bageshwar will watch a one-minute clip of their grandchild on a mid-range phone. They will not wait for a long video to load.

07How does AMS cover a school event?

We start with the school calendar, not the camera. On the first call we ask for the event dates, the permission policy, and who will approve posts. Then we plan the rehearsal shoots, the live coverage and the edit together, so the admission reels are planned before the event, not found after it.

On the day, we shoot the stage, the audience and the backstage, and record sound separately. Then the edit runs in order of who needs it first: a same-day highlight for parents, short reels for the following weeks, and admission cuts for the new session.

Education content always has two audiences, the student and the parent. As the Managing Director of Bansal Classes put it: 'Launching a podcast felt like a mountain to climb. They handled everything from scripting to final edit, and made sure our mission resonated with students and parents alike.'

08Questions people ask

Should we hire a videographer or let a teacher shoot on a phone?

For rehearsal clips and Children's Day stories, a teacher with a phone is fine. For annual day, the stage lighting, distance and hall sound make a phone struggle. If the footage will be used for admission ads, it is worth bringing in someone with proper lenses and a separate mic. Many schools do both.

How long should the annual day highlight video be?

Keep the first highlight under a minute, vertical, so parents can forward it on WhatsApp and it plays on any phone. Make a longer cut of a few minutes for the website and YouTube. Keep the full programme for parents who want to watch their own child's item.

Can we use annual day photos for admission ads?

Yes, if the parents of every child shown have agreed to their child appearing in ads, not just posts. Check your permission note says so. It is safest to choose shots where your teachers, the stage and wide crowd views carry the message, with close-ups only of children whose parents said yes.

When do admissions for the new session usually start?

It varies by school and board. Many private schools in the area open enquiries for the next session around the end of the year, often soon after annual day. That is why the annual day footage should be edited into admission content straight away, not saved for spring.
