Reels or Facebook ads first? What a local business in Rudrapur should start with
For most local businesses in Rudrapur, content comes first and ads follow. Reels give people something to check before they walk in. Ads then put budget behind the reel that already works. Start with ads only when there is a fixed deadline, such as admissions or an event, or a product that has already sold well.
We hear this question a lot on first calls. An owner has a fixed amount to spend each month. Should it go into shooting reels, or into Facebook and Instagram ads? Most advice online comes from someone selling one or the other.
Here is how we think it through at AMS. We have worked with 75+ brands since April 2023. It is not a rule. It is a way to think about your own shop, clinic, school or restaurant before you spend anything.
01What reels and ads each do, in plain words
A reel is a short video the Instagram or Facebook feed shows to people for free. How far it travels depends on whether people stop and watch. Nobody asked to see it, so it has to earn the stop on its own.
An ad is the same post with money behind it. You pay Meta to show it to people you choose, by distance from your shop, age and interests. The money goes from your own ad account straight to Meta. The agency fee is separate.
An ad does not make a weak post work. It makes a post reach more people, faster. If the reel is dull, you pay to show a dull reel to strangers. So the question is not reels or ads. It is which one to spend on first.
02When content should come first
Start with content if a stranger who taps your profile today would not understand what you sell, or would not want it. That covers most new brands and a fair number of old ones.
Kartar's Haveli came to us with no following. We built the account from a brand film, kitchen close-ups around the menu, dining content on rotation and a podcast cut for social. It reached 7,000+ followers from a standing start. An ad on day one would have sent people to an empty page.
Restaurants and cafés are content-first almost every time. Before a family drives over for dinner, someone checks the page: the food, the room, whether it looks busy, roughly what it costs. A phone under yellow tube light makes a good thali look oily. A wide shot of the room at four in the afternoon looks dead. Until a proper shoot fixes both, an ad only shows the oily thali to more people.
Retail is the same. A saree on a hanger loses its colour on a phone. Jewellery on a velvet tray tells nobody how it sits on a neck. The Royal Art launched with gallery pieces shot in situ, a Rakhi campaign built to a date and a news-style launch cut. The content was ready before the festival rush. The gallery did ₹70k+ in sales within its first twenty days.
03When ads should come first
Two situations flip the order: a date that does not move, and a product that already sells.
The Niti Xtreme Ultra Run had a registration deadline. Waiting to build a following was not an option. Presenter-led explainers answered the questions that stop a runner from signing up. Prize, partner and category creatives went out daily. Meta ads ran against the deadline, from first shoot to final spend. The race took 2,000+ entries in two months. The full case is at the Niti Xtreme Ultra Run case study.
Content was still made. The spend simply did not wait for a following to exist. The same applies to admissions season, a coaching batch about to start, a showroom opening, or an offer with an end date. If the date is fixed, run ads now and build content alongside.
The second case is a proven product. If a mattress, a tile or a course already sells well to walk-ins, customers know what it is. A simple product clip with a WhatsApp button can go live without a long content run first. You are not asking strangers to trust a new name. You are telling people nearby that a known thing is available here.
04Why the usual answer is content, then ads
For most businesses without a deadline, the order we usually recommend is content first, then ads behind the piece that already earned attention. We call it the Bluwalker method.
Bluwalker is a direct-to-consumer apparel label. We shot and cut an apparel drop in house and ran the paid media from the same room. When the drop reel started earning views on its own, it went into the ad account exactly as it was. No separate cutdown, no rebuild. It earned 3M+ views in a single month, and the label has done ₹8 lakh+ in sales every month since. The full story is at the Bluwalker case study.
The reason is simple. Free posts are a cheap test. The feed tells you which reel people stop on and share. Ads on that reel are ads on something an audience has already approved. Ads first means paying to run the same test.
Playmore shows what it looks like when both keep running: ₹20L+ in sales per month, driven by an always-on social and paid engine. Neither replaces the other.
05A short checklist to decide
Answer these honestly before you spend anything.
- Is there a date that does not move? If yes, ads now, content alongside.
- Would a stranger tapping your profile today understand what you sell? If no, content first.
- Has this exact product already sold well to walk-ins? If yes, it is ad-ready.
- Is there one reel people already watched and shared? If yes, that is your first ad.
- Can someone answer DMs and calls the same day? If no, fix that before either.
Mostly no, and no date: content first. A fixed date: ads now, content alongside. A proven product and a profile that holds up: ads can start now. One reel people already shared: that is your first ad, in the Bluwalker order. If you have posted for months with nothing to show, read Why your Instagram is not bringing customers (and what to fix first) before deciding.
06What a first month of content-first looks like
The shape is the same for most clients. The details are set on the call, because a clinic and a mithai shop do not need the same month.
- A call about what you sell, who buys it, and what is coming up.
- Shooting at your premises, timed for the hours you are least busy.
- Edits sent to you for a yes or a change.
- Posts going out through the month, while we watch which ones people stop on.
- At month end, a plain note on what went out, what it reached, and what to try next.
The aim is real content, a profile that holds up, and a clear view of which piece deserves the first ad budget. Marketing retainers start at ₹35,000 a month plus GST. What the month includes is set on the call. The full breakdown is at How much does social media marketing cost in Rudrapur?.
07What a first month of ads-first looks like
Ads-first is more setup and less shooting, to begin with.
- Your own ad account and page, in your name. Ad spend goes from you to Meta directly.
- Somewhere for the tap to land: a profile that holds up, a WhatsApp button, or a landing page.
- A first set of creatives, such as a presenter-led explainer, a product clip or a plain offer.
- Targeting by distance from your premises, and one clear action: call, WhatsApp or a form.
- Daily checks, with money moved towards whatever brings enquiries. Content still being shot alongside.
If the ad needs a form, such as admissions or event registration, a landing page is worth building. It can sit on your own website. Business websites start at ₹50,000 plus GST, with the domain and hosting in your name. See Website Design & Development in Rudrapur for how we build them.
Ad spend is not part of either price. You pay it to Meta or Google from an account you own. Still unsure which camp you are in? Call +91 91059 43909 or write to nishant@advancemediasolution.com. If ads are not the right first spend, we will say so.
08Questions people ask
Can I run Facebook ads without any reels?
Yes, with a photo or a plain graphic. But people tap through to the profile, and it has to hold up when they get there. For a product with a clear price and a known use, that can work. For a restaurant or a clothing shop, people want to see the food or the fabric first.
How much should I keep aside for ad spend?
We do not put a figure on it in a guide. It depends on how far you want the ad to reach, what you are offering and what one sale is worth to you. Ad spend goes from your own account directly to Meta or Google. Retainers start at ₹35,000 a month plus GST, and the ad budget sits on top, decided on the call.
Do I need a website before running ads?
Not always. If the action is a WhatsApp message or a call, a clean profile and a WhatsApp button are enough to start. If the ad needs a form, such as admissions or a booking, build a landing page first. Business websites start at ₹50,000 plus GST, with the domain and hosting in your name.
Who owns the ad account and the page?
You do. The page, the Instagram account and the ad account stay in your name, and we work inside them as partners. If you ever move on, your pixel data, audiences and campaign history stay with you, along with everything posted on your page.
