Google now shows a WhatsApp button on business listings: what should you set up?
Google is showing WhatsApp buttons on some business listings in Search, next to call and directions. A claimed and verified Business Profile can add a WhatsApp click-to-chat link under Contact, then Chat, where the feature is available. Add it this week, use a WhatsApp Business number someone actually answers, and set up quick replies first.
Search for a shop in Rudrapur or a clinic in Haldwani on your phone and you get a box with buttons: Call, Directions, Website. On some listings there is now a green one as well. It opens WhatsApp.
For a business here, that matters. Most of your customers already prefer to send a WhatsApp message than to call, especially for a price, a photo or a timing. Here is what changed, how to add the button, and what to fix before you do.
01What exactly did Google change?
On 7 October 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google is now showing WhatsApp buttons in local results, in place of the chat button or alongside the other action buttons. It was spotted by Sachin Patel. Barry Schwartz, who runs the site, could see it too and wrote that it might be rolled out fully.
Google has not published an announcement. The report does not say which countries or which devices. What Google has published is a help page, Chat with customers from your Business Profile, which explains how a business adds the option:
- Only a claimed and verified Business Profile can add it.
- Chat options are available in select regions, so you may not see the setting yet.
- You can add a WhatsApp click-to-chat link or a phone number that receives text messages.
- If you add both, only the text message option is shown to customers.
- Chat activity shows up in your profile's performance numbers.
A second change came on 28 October. Google started emailing businesses to say it is automatically adding Facebook Messenger links to their profiles.
02How do I add WhatsApp to my Google Business Profile?
The steps from Google's help page take about five minutes:
- Open your Business Profile and tap Edit profile.
- Go to Contact, and tap Edit next to Chat.
- Open the Chat dropdown and choose WhatsApp.
- Paste your click-to-chat link and save.
A click-to-chat link is wa.me followed by a slash and your full number with the country code, so 91 and then the ten digits. Leave out the plus sign, spaces and dashes. Tap the link on your own phone before you save it, to be sure it opens the right chat.
If you see no Chat option at all, your profile may not be verified, or the feature may not have reached your listing. Do not pay anyone who promises to switch it on for you. Check again in a few weeks.
03What does this mean for a local business?
In AMS's view, this is the most useful Google change of the season for small businesses in Kumaon. A customer who finds you on Google can now reach you in the app they already use all day, without saving your number first.
The people who tap it are close to buying. They want the price of a sofa, the doctor's timing on Sunday, whether the cake can be ready by evening, or a photo of the blue kurta in size L. A call feels like a commitment to many of them. A WhatsApp message does not.
The catch is simple. A button only helps if someone replies. A missed call is forgotten, but an unanswered WhatsApp message sits there with two grey ticks, and the customer remembers it. For a shop, that is worse than having no button at all.
04What should I do this week?
- Search your business name on Google on your phone and see which buttons show today.
- Move the business to the WhatsApp Business app if it still runs on a personal number. Add your hours, address and a short description.
- Set a greeting message and an away message that says when you will reply.
- Save quick replies for the five questions you get most: price range, timings, location, delivery and booking.
- Add a catalogue with real photos of what you sell, so you can send a product in one tap.
- Decide who answers, and when. One named person in the shop beats everyone and no one.
- Check whether Google has added a Messenger link. If nobody reads your Facebook messages, fix that or remove it.
Then add the WhatsApp link in your profile. Doing it in this order means the first customer who taps the button gets a proper reply, not silence.
05Should the WhatsApp number be the same as my calling number?
Usually, yes. Customers trust a number they have seen on your board, your bill and your Google listing. If the WhatsApp number is different, some will think it is a fake account.
There are fair exceptions. A clinic may want WhatsApp to go to the front desk while calls go to the reception landline. A showroom may want enquiries on a sales phone that stays in the shop, not the owner's pocket. That is fine, as long as the number is written on your shop and your social pages too.
Keep one rule from Google's recent changes in mind. Google may now remove posts that carry contact details it cannot verify, which we covered in Google may now remove Business Profile posts that carry an unverified phone number. Put the WhatsApp link in the Chat field, where it belongs, not typed into your posts or your business name.
06What should I not panic about?
Do not worry if the button has not appeared on your listing. Google has not said where it is live, and the setting itself says select regions. Your ranking does not depend on it.
You do not need the WhatsApp Business API, a chatbot or a paid provider for this. The free WhatsApp Business app on one phone is enough for most shops, clinics and restaurants. A provider makes sense only when you are handling a lot of chats with several staff.
Calls are not going away either. Older customers and urgent ones will still ring. The button gives the rest of your customers a way in that suits them.
07How does AMS handle WhatsApp for clients?
Advance Media Solution does not manage Google Business Profiles as a service. What we do set up for clients is the WhatsApp side: the greeting, the quick replies, the catalogue photos, and the reels and ads that send people to the chat. We also answer DMs and comments for many of the 75+ brands we work with.
If your ads already open WhatsApp, our guide at Should my Facebook and Instagram ads open WhatsApp or a lead form? explains when that beats a lead form. For help with the content and replies, see Social Media Marketing Agency in Rudrapur or call +91 91059 43909. Either way, open your own listing on your phone today and look for the green button.
08Questions people ask
Why can't I see the Chat option in my Business Profile?
Google says chat options are available only in select regions and only for claimed and verified profiles. If your profile is verified and you still see nothing, the feature has probably not reached your listing yet. There is nothing to buy or apply for. Check the Contact section again in a few weeks.
Can I use one WhatsApp number for two branches?
Yes. Google's help page says several Business Profiles can use the same WhatsApp link. It works well when one person handles enquiries for both shops. Make sure the replies say which branch the customer should visit, so nobody drives to the wrong one.
Will a WhatsApp button get me more customers?
It can make it easier for people who already found you to get in touch. It will not bring people who never see your listing. Your photos, reviews and replies still decide whether someone messages and then visits. Nobody can promise a number of extra customers from one button.
What if Google added a Messenger link I did not ask for?
Google has been emailing businesses about adding Facebook Messenger links automatically. If someone checks your Facebook page messages every day, it can stay. If not, people will message and wait. Either start reading Messenger or remove the link from your profile, so customers are not left hanging.
