Should my Facebook and Instagram ads open WhatsApp or a lead form?

If your business sells through conversation and someone can reply within minutes, start with ads that open a WhatsApp chat. If you need a list of names to call back, or nobody can watch the phone all day, use a lead form with a review step. The right answer depends less on the ad and more on who replies.

You have decided to run Meta ads. Then Ads Manager asks where people should go when they tap. A WhatsApp chat, a form inside Facebook, a call, a website. Most owners pick whatever the last agency or nephew suggested.

For a clinic, coaching centre, showroom or builder in Kumaon, the choice usually comes down to two: a WhatsApp ad or a lead form. Here is how they differ, which suits which business, and the mistakes that waste the budget.

01What is the difference between a WhatsApp ad and a lead form ad?

Both run on Facebook and Instagram, and both can use the same reel. The difference is what happens after the tap.

WhatsApp ads are often called click-to-WhatsApp ads. Lead form ads are also called instant forms or lead ads. They are the same things under different names.

02Which one gets better leads?

Usually, WhatsApp brings fewer enquiries but warmer ones. The person typed a message to you, from their own number, about your product. A lead form is easier to fill in, so it tends to bring more names, and more of them go cold.

When you build a form, Meta offers two main types. More volume is quick to fill out and submit. Higher intent adds a review step, so people confirm their details before sending. For most local businesses, we choose higher intent. Fewer forms, but more people who actually pick up the phone.

On the WhatsApp side, choose the right goal. WhatsApp's business guide describes the setup: the Engagement objective, then Messaging apps, then WhatsApp, then Leads as the performance goal. In Meta's experiment cited there, ads optimised for leads drove 24% lower cost per lead on average than ads optimised for conversations. Your results will differ, but that is the setting to start with.

03Which suits my kind of business?

A rough guide from the businesses we run ads for:

  • Clinics and physios: WhatsApp. Patients want to describe the problem and ask the fee first.
  • Coaching institutes and schools: either. A lead form suits a scholarship test drive. WhatsApp suits parents with questions.
  • Showrooms, jewellers and furniture stores: WhatsApp. People want a photo, a price and a location.
  • Builders and real estate: a higher intent lead form, followed by a call within the hour. Buyers expect a call.
  • Restaurants and cafes: WhatsApp, for table and party bookings.
  • Events and races: often a website registration page, not either of these.

The deciding question is simple. When a customer is interested, do they want to talk now, or be called later? Answer that honestly for your own customers. Our post Should I boost my Instagram post or run ads from Ads Manager? explains why either of these needs Ads Manager, not the Boost button.

04What happens after the lead comes in?

This is where most local ad money is lost. WhatsApp's own guide puts it plainly: "Leads that receive a response within minutes are significantly more likely to convert."

Before you switch on a WhatsApp ad, set up three things in WhatsApp Business:

  • A greeting message that says who you are and asks one useful question.
  • Quick replies for your three most common questions: price, location, timings.
  • Away hours, so night messages get an honest reply about when you will answer.

For lead forms, decide who calls, and by when. A list downloaded once a week is a list of people who have already bought elsewhere. Call the same day, introduce yourself and say where they saw you. Calling rules have tightened, so read TRAI's new spam rules: what changes for businesses that call and SMS customers before anyone dials from a personal number.

If you use a WhatsApp Business API provider, check how replies are billed now. WhatsApp now charges businesses for service replies: what a local business should check covers the 2026 charges.

05Can I run both and see which works?

Yes, and for a new advertiser it is the honest way to decide. Keep everything the same except the destination: same reel, same area, same budget, same dates. Run both for about two weeks.

Then judge them on what matters, not on what Ads Manager shows. Keep a simple sheet with four columns: date, name, which ad, and booked or not. Cost per lead tells you which ad is cheap. The sheet tells you which ad brings customers.

A Kichha clinic and a Haldwani showroom will get different answers. That is fine. Once one wins clearly, move most of the budget there and keep a small test running on the other.

06What mistakes do owners make with these ads?

  • Running a WhatsApp ad on a number nobody watches during the day.
  • Using a lead form with eight questions. Every extra question loses people.
  • Asking for a budget or an email in the form. Most local buyers will skip it or type nonsense.
  • Not saying the price range or area in the ad, so the wrong people message.
  • Judging the ad after three days. The first week is the system learning.
  • Sending everyone to a website that loads slowly on mobile data.

The last one is common. If you do want people on your website, it has to load fast on an ordinary phone and show a WhatsApp button on every page. Our Website Design & Development in Rudrapur page explains how we build for that.

07How does AMS set these ads up?

Advance Media Solution plans, shoots and runs Meta ads for local businesses from our studio in Rudrapur. On the first call, we do not ask about budget first. We ask who answers WhatsApp, during which hours, and what customers ask in the first message. That decides the destination before any reel is shot.

Then the reel we shoot becomes the ad, with production and media buying in the same room. We set up the greeting, quick replies and the tracking sheet with you, and we report on booked customers, not only cost per lead. More on how we work is on Facebook Ads Agency in Rudrapur | Meta Ads.

Retainers start from ₹35,000 a month plus GST, and ad spend is paid by you directly to Meta. If you want a second opinion on your current ads, call +91 91059 43909.

08Questions people ask

Do I need the WhatsApp Business app for WhatsApp ads?

You need a WhatsApp Business account linked to your Facebook Page, either through the free WhatsApp Business app or through an API provider. The free app is enough for most small businesses. Use the business number your customers already know, and keep it on a phone that someone checks through the day.

Are lead form leads fake?

Most are real people, but some tapped by mistake or forgot by the time you called. That is why the higher intent setting helps, since it asks people to review their details first. Calling the same day helps more. Someone who filled a form an hour ago remembers you. Someone you call a week later does not.

Can I use a call button instead?

Yes. Call ads suit urgent needs, such as a plumber, an ambulance service or a same-day repair. For most shops, clinics and showrooms, people prefer to message first and call later. If you do run call ads, make sure someone answers during the hours the ad runs, or switch the ad off outside them.

Which works better for customers who speak Hindi?

Both work in Hindi. Write the ad and the form questions in the language your customers use. On WhatsApp, reply in whatever language the customer writes in. Many people in Kumaon type Hindi in English letters, and a reply in the same style feels natural.
