Year-end recap reel 2026: when should a local business start making it?
Start collecting clips now, before November begins. Pick the year's best moments by the end of November, shoot the gaps in the first week of December, and lock the edit by about 20 December. Post it in the last week of December, between Christmas and New Year's Eve, when people are already looking back at their own year.
Every December, feeds fill up with recap reels. Most come from creators and big brands. Very few come from the shop, clinic or restaurant down the road, which is a missed chance. A local business has the best recap material there is: real customers, real festivals, real people behind the counter.
Most owners skip it because of time. By late December nobody has the energy to dig through a year of phone videos. So plan it now, while there are still about eight weeks to go, and it becomes one easy edit.
01Who should make a year-end recap reel?
Almost any local business with a year of activity behind it. Some gain more than others:
- Restaurants, cafes and banquet halls, with a year of events, menus and families.
- Schools and coaching institutes, which can show parents a full academic year.
- Clinics and gyms, as a thank-you to patients and members, with their consent.
- Showrooms and shops, with festival rushes, new arrivals and regulars.
- SIDCUL factories and B2B firms, showing projects shipped, visits and team moments.
- New businesses in their first year, showing the journey from opening day.
A recap is not an ad. It is a thank-you note that also reminds people you are busy, trusted and here next year. Restaurants selling New Year's Eve can post it alongside the plan in New Year's Eve 2026: when should restaurants and banquet halls start selling the night?, since both go up in the same week.
02What should a business recap reel show?
The best recaps tell one story, not twelve. Pick one thread and follow it:
| Story | Good for | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Month by month | Shops, restaurants, schools | One clip per month, with the month on screen |
| Thank you, customers | Clinics, gyms, salons | Regulars and their words, with consent |
| Behind the counter | Any business with a team | Staff at work, the festival rush, closing time |
| Our first year | New businesses | Opening day, the first customer, today |
| Projects delivered | Builders, factories, interior firms | Before, during and handover |
In Kumaon, the festival rhythm gives you a structure for free: Holi, Harela, Rakhi, Navratri, Diwali and the wedding months. Use the clips you already posted for each one, and let the festivals mark the months.
03When should I start, and what is the plan?
Work backwards from the last week of December. Here is the plan we follow:
- Now, at the turn of the month: make one folder on the shop phone or in Google Drive. Ask staff to drop every good clip of the year into it.
- By the end of November: watch everything once and shortlist the best twenty or thirty moments.
- Last week of November: choose the story and write one line for each part.
- First week of December: shoot what is missing. A thank-you from the owner, the team together, a few customers who agree to speak.
- Second week of December: first edit, with music and text on screen.
- By about 20 December: final edit approved, with a vertical version for reels and stories.
- Between Christmas and 31 December: post it, and share it to stories and WhatsApp Status.
- First week of January: pin it, and use its clips in your first posts of the new year.
December is the busiest month for most shops and restaurants here, with weddings, Christmas and New Year all at once. That is why the footage work belongs in November.
04Where do I find footage from the whole year?
Most of it is already on someone's phone. Look in:
- Your own posts and stories. Download the original files, not screen recordings.
- Staff phones, especially from festival days and busy evenings.
- Customer tags and reposts, used only with the customer's permission.
- WhatsApp groups, though the quality is often low.
- Any professional shoot you did this year. Ask your agency for the raw clips.
A tip from our edit room: rough clips from early in the year are fine. They make the end of the year look like progress. What you need is variety: faces, places and moments, not twenty shots of the same counter.
05How long should a recap reel be, and in which language?
Keep it short enough to watch twice. For most local businesses that means well under a minute. Text on screen should carry the story, because many people watch with the sound off. Put the month or festival name on screen, big enough to read on a mid-range phone.
The language should follow your customers. For most businesses in Udham Singh Nagar, a short Hindi thank-you from the owner at the end feels warmer than an English caption. Our post on Should my business reels be in Hindi, English or Hinglish? goes into this.
Business accounts often see a smaller music library on Instagram. Pick the track from inside the app, so the reel is not muted later.
06What mistakes should I avoid with a recap reel?
- Leaving it to 31 December, then posting a rushed slideshow.
- Showing customers or children without their permission.
- Cramming in every photo of the year, so nothing stays on screen long enough to see.
- Adding a hard sell at the end. A thank-you and your number are enough.
- Copying a trending template so exactly that your business disappears.
- Posting it once and forgetting it. Pin it, and reuse the clips in January.
The first mistake causes most of the others. A rushed recap is a list of photos. A planned one is a story your customers want to share.
07Can AMS make our year-end recap reel?
Yes. Advance Media Solution is a seven-person studio in Metropolis City, Rudrapur. For clients we already shoot for, the recap is mostly an edit, because the footage exists. We have shot banquet weddings live and a presenter-led tour of the kids' play zone for Kartar's Haveli, and fair coverage day and night for Saras Mela. That kind of footage is what a recap is made of.
If you have a year of clips on phones and no time to cut them, our Video Editing Services in Rudrapur | Reels page explains how we edit. Call +91 91059 43909 in November, before December gets busy. Even if you edit it yourself, make the folder today.
08Questions people ask
Should a recap reel also go on Facebook and WhatsApp?
Yes. Post the same vertical file to Facebook, and share it to WhatsApp Status and your customer broadcast list. Many older customers in Kumaon see far more on WhatsApp than on Instagram. Send it once, with a short thank-you, and do not follow it with an offer the same day.
Can I use Instagram's recap templates?
Instagram has offered year-end recap templates in past years, and they are quick. The trouble is that every business using one looks the same. If you are short of time, use a template with your own clips and your own words on screen. If you can, cut a simple edit of your own.
What if this was a hard year for the business?
Then make it about the customers and the team who stayed. A recap does not need sales figures or big claims. A thank-you to regulars, the staff who worked through the festival rush, and one thing you are looking forward to is honest, and people respond to that.
Should I put an offer in the recap reel?
No. Keep the recap a thank-you. If you have a New Year offer, post it separately a day or two later, when people have just seen your year and remember you. Mixing the two makes the thank-you feel like an advert, and fewer people share it.
