Should my business reels be in Hindi, English or Hinglish?

Speak the language your customers use at your counter and in your DMs. For most shops, clinics and restaurants in Kumaon and Udham Singh Nagar, that is Hindi or Hinglish, with key words on screen. Use English when buyers are spread across India or the product is sold in English. Test both with the same video.

On almost every first call, an owner asks the same thing, usually a little embarrassed: "Reel Hindi mein banayein ya English mein? English zyada professional lagta hai na?" The worry is that Hindi looks small-town and English looks like a brand.

The honest answer is that the right language is the one your buyer thinks in. Here is how to work that out for your business, what Instagram's translation tools now do, and the mistakes we see most often.

01What language do my customers actually use?

Do the counter test before you write a single script. For one week, notice how customers ask questions at the shop, on the phone and in WhatsApp. "Rate kya hai?" "Kal khula hai?" "Size available hai?" That is your reel language.

Then look at your DMs and Google reviews. If most are in Roman Hindi, your audience reads Hinglish. If they are in English, your buyers may be younger, from outside the area, or professionals.

In AMS's experience, it usually breaks down like this:

BusinessUsual best languageWhy
Sweet shop, kirana, hardwareHindiFamilies decide, and they ask in Hindi
Restaurant or cafeHinglishYoung diners mix both, menus stay in English
Clinic or physioHindi, with medical terms in EnglishPatients trust a doctor who explains simply
Coaching centreHinglishStudents talk Hinglish, parents follow Hindi
Online clothing labelHinglish or EnglishBuyers are spread across India
SIDCUL supplierEnglishBuyers are purchase heads and plant managers

02Is Hinglish better than pure Hindi?

For speaking, Hinglish is how many younger people in Haldwani and Rudrapur actually talk. A presenter who says "aaj ka special" and "free home delivery" in one breath sounds normal. Pure, formal Hindi can sound like a news bulletin, and pure English can sound like an ad from Delhi.

For writing, the bigger question is script. Roman Hindi is easier to type and to search. People type "momos haldwani" or "sasti saree rudrapur" in Roman letters. Devanagari looks warm and local, but small Devanagari text on a mid-range phone can be hard to read.

Our usual rule: speak in the customer's language, put two or three key words on screen in large text, and write the caption in Roman Hindi or simple English. Keep the price, the place and the next step in both.

03Can Instagram translate my reels into Hindi for me?

Yes, to a point. In October 2025, Meta added Hindi and Portuguese to its AI translations for reels, alongside English and Spanish, as Storyboard18 reported. In January 2026, FoneArena reported Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi rolling out to everyone in India.

What the tool does, according to those reports:

  • It dubs the reel while copying the tone and sound of your own voice.
  • Lip syncing is optional and matches your mouth movements to the dubbed audio.
  • Translated reels carry a "Translated with Meta AI" label, and viewers can switch back to the original audio.
  • It is free for public Instagram accounts in regions where Meta AI is available. You switch it on before publishing.

PRmoment reported in July 2026 that the Edits app can now add automatic bilingual captions, with Hindi among the second languages. Captions on posts and reels also show a "See Translation" link for viewers using a different app language.

In AMS's view, dubbing is useful when you want reach beyond your region, such as a pahadi food brand shipping to Delhi. For a local shop, a dub of the owner never sounds quite like the owner. Shoot in the real language and use translation as a bonus.

04What should go on screen and in the caption?

Many people watch reels with the sound off, on a bus, in a queue or at work. So the words on screen do half the selling. Write them in the language of the voice, in large letters, and keep each line short.

  • First two seconds: the hook in four or five words, such as "Shaadi ke liye lehenga?"
  • Middle: the product, the price range or the offer, one fact per screen.
  • End: where you are and how to order, such as "Gandhi Park ke paas, WhatsApp karein".
  • Caption, first line: the same hook, then the details people search for.
  • Subtitles for anyone speaking on camera, checked by a person, not left to auto-captions alone.

Auto-captions often get Hindi and Hinglish words wrong, and a wrong word in a price or an address costs you a customer. Read every caption before posting. Our editors do this on every reel, because it is the step most often skipped.

05How do we decide the language for a client?

We start with the counter test above, then look at three things on the first call: who buys, who decides and where they live. A school's student may watch in Hinglish, but the parent who pays decides in Hindi.

Next, we let the person on camera speak the way they speak. When the owner explains the product, the reel works best in their natural language. For Refresh Mattress, we filmed the showroom launch with the owner on camera. For Shri Shyam Ji Earthing, the owner explains earthing on camera. Neither needed a script in a language they do not use every day.

Finally, we test. We cut the same reel twice, once in Hindi and once in Hinglish or English, and post them a week apart or run both as ads. We compare saves, shares and DMs, not views. The language that brings questions is the one to keep. You can see how we plan reels month by month at Content Creation Agency in Rudrapur | Monthly Reels.

06What mistakes do owners make with reel language?

Most language mistakes come from trying to sound bigger than the business is. The common ones:

  • Writing the script in English and reading it stiffly, when the owner talks freely in Hindi.
  • Translating captions word for word with an app, so the Hindi reads like a government notice.
  • Using small, decorative Devanagari fonts that blur on a mid-range phone.
  • Mixing three languages in one reel, so nobody follows it fully.
  • Posting English-only reels for a walk-in shop whose buyers are mostly Hindi speakers.
  • Adding a Kumaoni line as a gimmick. Use pahadi words when they are genuinely yours, and your customers will notice the difference.

If you are not sure, err towards the language of your best customers, not your newest ones. 07Questions people ask

Should I write captions in Devanagari or Roman Hindi?

Roman Hindi is usually better for the caption because people search and type in Roman letters. Devanagari works well as large on-screen text, where it looks warm and local. Avoid long Devanagari captions in small fonts, which are hard to read on a mid-range phone in bright light.

Will a Hindi reel reach people who do not speak Hindi?

Instagram shows a "See Translation" link under captions for viewers whose app language is different, according to PRmoment. Meta AI can also dub reels into other languages if you switch it on. For a local shop, though, people who do not speak Hindi are rarely your main buyers.

Is English more professional for a clinic or a showroom?

Not to the patient or buyer who thinks in Hindi. Trust comes from being understood. A doctor explaining a condition simply in Hindi often earns more confidence than a polished English script. Keep technical terms in English where patients already use them, such as scan, report or physio.

Does the language change how ads perform?

It changes who stops scrolling. An ad in the customer's own language usually gets more questions from the right people. Test two versions of the same ad with the same budget and audience, and compare the chats and calls each one brings, not the clicks.
