Facebook now lets people tell it what they want to see: what should a local business do?

Meta announced on 13 October 2026 that Facebook users can tell its algorithm, in their own words, what they want more or less of in Feed and Reels. Meta has not named countries. A local business should make each post clearly about one thing, and stop repeating posters people may mark as not interested.

Most local Pages in Kumaon post the same few things: a festival wish, an offer poster, the shop's logo. Facebook has always guessed what people want from what they watch and tap. Now it is giving them a direct way to say so.

On 13 October 2026, Meta announced a tool called Your algorithm. Here is what changed, what it may mean for a shop or clinic in Haldwani or Rudrapur, what to check this week, and what nobody knows yet.

01What exactly did Facebook change?

Meta's newsroom post is titled 'Your Algorithm, Your Words'. It describes AI tools that let people shape what they see in Feed and Reels. There are two parts:

  • Your algorithm: a space where a person adds and manages the topics they want to see. It is reached from the three-dot menu on posts.
  • Feedback in words: after someone taps 'Interested' or 'Not interested', Facebook may ask follow-up questions, and they can describe what they want more or less of.

Meta says recommendations then update in real time, within the same session. Metricool's summary adds that the tool shows topics a person has recently engaged with, in 'Interested in' and 'Not interested in' lists. It also notes that the idea started on Instagram before coming to Facebook.

02Is Facebook's Your algorithm live in India?

We cannot say for sure. Meta's post says the tool is rolling out, but it names no countries and gives no dates. TechCrunch's report does not mention India either. Some of your customers may have it now, and others may not see it for months.

The quick check takes a minute. Open Facebook on your phone, tap the three dots on any post, and look for it. If it is not there, that is normal. Plan for the direction, not for a date.

03What does this mean for a local business?

Meta's post does not mention Pages, businesses or ads at all. So what follows is AMS's view, not Meta's.

Facebook will now get more direct signals about what each person wants. Someone in Haldwani might ask for more local food and less of something else. A reel that is clearly about one dish gives the system something to match. A poster that says 'Happy Diwali' with a logo gives it very little.

The other side is 'Not interested'. That was already a tap, and now it can come with a reason in the person's own words. A Page that pushes the same offer poster every day is the kind of thing people tire of.

We should be honest about scale. In a small town, we doubt most people will open this menu soon. Many of your buyers are parents and older relatives who simply scroll. But the direction is clear, and the fix is something you should do anyway.

04What should I do this week?

This is the short list we would give a client:

  • Check the menu on your own phone, so you know what your customers may see.
  • Open your Page and read your last ten posts. Could a stranger say what each one is about in three words? If not, it is vague.
  • Give each post one subject. 'Winter shawls at our shop', not 'New arrivals'.
  • Say that subject out loud in the first line of the reel, and write it again in the caption.
  • Name your area in the caption in words, not only on the poster: 'Kaladhungi Road, Haldwani'.
  • Drop one repeated offer poster this week, and shoot a real video instead.
  • Reply to comments. People asking questions are telling you exactly what they want.

Speak the way your customers speak. For most businesses here, that means Hindi or Hinglish on mid-range phones, often with the sound off. So add captions as well.

05How should I write a post so its topic is clear?

Think of how a person would describe your post to a friend. These are the kinds of changes we make:

Vague postClear postWhat changed
New collection in storePashmina shawls for winter weddings, shown on a model at our shopSays the product and the occasion
Best food in townOur butter chicken, made from scratch, shot in the kitchenSays the dish and shows it
Admissions openA teacher shows how the Class 6 science lab worksShows what parents want to see
Healthy life, happy lifeDoctor explains when knee pain needs a check-upNames the problem people have

Nobody outside Meta knows exactly how the system reads a post. Meta says only that large language models help interpret what people type. Metricool's advice to social media managers is to define your brand clearly within your niche, and we agree. Clear words and a clear subject cost nothing, and they help the human watching too.

06What should I not panic about?

Before you change everything, keep these in mind:

  • This is not a penalty. Nothing in Meta's post says Pages will lose reach.
  • Your followers and your photo posts have not gone anywhere.
  • Nothing was said about ads, so there is no reason to pause a running campaign.
  • You do not need to stuff captions with keywords. Write the way you speak.
  • Do not ask customers to add your shop as a topic. The tool is about interests, and the request will confuse them.
  • Do not pay anyone for an 'algorithm package'. Nobody can sell access to this.

07How does AMS handle this for local clients?

Advance Media Solution is a seven-person studio in Rudrapur. Each month we plan content so every reel has one subject, shot at your business, in the language your customers use. We post it to Facebook and Instagram, with captions written for each.

On a first call, we read your last ten posts before anything else. Those posts usually show where to start. How we run this is at Social Media Marketing Agency in Rudrapur, and retainers start from ₹35,000 a month plus GST, as set out at Digital Marketing Packages in Rudrapur from ₹35,000. If you would rather talk, call +91 91059 43909. Even if you never hire us, read your last ten posts today.

08Questions people ask

How do I find Your algorithm on Facebook?

Open Facebook, tap the three dots on any post, and look for the option in that menu. Meta says the tool is rolling out, so it may not be on your account yet. There is nothing a business needs to switch on, because this is a setting for each person's own feed.

Can someone block my business with this tool?

The tool lets people say what they want more or less of. It is separate from blocking a Page. Meta has not said how this affects any one business, so treat 'Not interested' as a reminder: if your posts feel repetitive to you, they probably feel the same to your customers.

Does Instagram have the same thing?

The idea started on Instagram, according to Metricool, and then came to Facebook. Which accounts have it can vary by app and country. The same advice works on both apps, so one clear reel with a clear caption can be posted to each without any extra work.

Will this change what I pay for Facebook ads?

Meta's announcement does not mention ads, so anyone who claims to know is guessing. Your ad still reaches people through your targeting and budget settings. If you run ads, keep judging them the plain way, by the calls, chats and walk-ins they bring, and not by rumours about the algorithm.
