Winter after Diwali: when to shoot, post and promote your winter stock and menu
Winter selling in the Terai and Kumaon usually starts in mid to late November, just after Diwali and Bhai Dooj. Decide your winter stock or menu in early October, shoot it before Dussehra or in the week after Bhai Dooj, and switch your page to winter from about 12 November.
Every year it happens the same way. Diwali takes over the shop, the feed and the owner's phone until Bhai Dooj. Then one evening the air turns cold, customers start asking for jackets, soup or a heater, and the page is still full of diyas.
This year the gap is tight. Diwali is on 8 November and the wedding season starts after Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November. If winter content is not planned now, it will not get shot at all. Here is a dated plan, working back from the first cold weeks.
01Who should plan for winter now?
Any business whose products, menu or timings change when it gets cold. In Udham Singh Nagar and the hills that is a long list:
- Clothing shops: woollens, jackets, shawls, kids' winter wear.
- Cafes, dhabas and restaurants: soups, tandoori, chai, gajar halwa, outdoor seating with a fire.
- Sweet shops and bakeries with winter specials.
- Electronics and home stores: heaters, geysers, blankets, mattresses.
- Gyms and sports academies, where early mornings get harder to sell.
- Homestays and hotels around Nainital, Bhimtal and Mukteshwar, as people plan winter trips to the hills.
If you sell the same thing all year and keep the same hours, you can skip most of this. Just change your photos so the page does not look stuck in summer.
02When does winter selling actually start?
It changes a little every year, so we plan around the calendar rather than the thermometer. In the plains, evenings usually turn cold through November, and December brings foggy mornings. Most shops feel the switch in the second half of November.
That lands right after the festivals. These are the dates from our Diwali countdown, which you can read in full at Diwali 2026 marketing plan for shops in Rudrapur and Haldwani: a week-by-week countdown:
- Dussehra: Tuesday 20 October.
- Dhanteras: Friday 6 November.
- Diwali: Sunday 8 November.
- Bhai Dooj: 10 or 11 November, depending on the calendar.
- Dev Uthani Ekadashi: 20 November, when the wedding season opens.
So there are two clean windows to shoot winter content: before Dussehra, or between Bhai Dooj and the first wedding dates. Everything in between belongs to Diwali.
03What should happen each week from now to December?
Work back from about 12 November, when your page switches to winter.
| Dates | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 Oct | Fix the winter stock or menu, the price points and the hero items. Order early. | You cannot shoot what has not arrived. |
| 11 to 19 Oct | Shoot winter content on the same day as the Diwali shoot, if stock is in. Two sets, one crew visit. | After Dussehra nobody has time. |
| 21 Oct to 11 Nov | Diwali owns the feed. One winter teaser at most. Note which winter questions customers ask. | Mixing messages weakens both. |
| 12 to 15 Nov | Shoot now if you missed October. Change the profile photo, highlights and pinned posts to winter. | The first cold evenings are close. |
| 16 to 30 Nov | Post winter reels three or four times a week. Put money behind the one that gets the most saves and DMs. | Demand is rising and weddings share the attention. |
| December | Fog, timings and delivery updates. Hill trips and New Year plans for hotels and cafes. | Customers now ask practical questions. |
If you only manage one thing on this list, make it the shoot. Posting can be fixed later. Footage of stock you have already sold cannot.
04What winter content works for each kind of business?
The best winter reels show warmth, not discounts. A few ideas we plan with clients:
- Clothing: one jacket worn three ways, the full woollen wall from the door, a quick fit check with a regular customer. Noore Pashmina's shawl campaign was shot on location and at the loom, which shows where the warmth comes from.
- Cafes and restaurants: steam rising off soup or chai, the tandoor at night, the table by the heater. Shoot at dusk for warm light.
- Sweet shops: the halwa kadhai, fresh batches in the morning, gift boxes for winter visits.
- Electronics: a heater or geyser explained in Hindi in thirty seconds, with what size suits what room.
- Gyms: members training on a cold morning, the warm-up routine, a winter batch timing.
- Homestays: the view from the room at sunrise, the fireplace, the road conditions, and how to book on WhatsApp.
For hill properties, remember the guest is often checking on patchy data. Keep photos light, put the WhatsApp number in the first line, and answer the same five questions in a pinned post.
05Should I change my Google listing for winter?
Yes, if your hours change. Many shops in the plains open later or close earlier once it gets cold, and customers notice. If your Google listing still shows the summer timings, someone may suggest an edit.
Google now gives you 4 days to accept or reject a suggested edit they are notified about, and may publish it after that. We explained that change here: Google now gives you 4 days to reject a suggested edit to your Business Profile.
The simple routine for winter:
- Update your regular hours on Google the day your winter timings start.
- Change the same timings on your website, WhatsApp Business profile and Instagram bio.
- Add fresh winter photos to the listing, so it does not show summer stock.
- Reply to new reviews within a day or two while traffic is high.
06What mistakes do shops make with winter marketing?
- Waiting for the cold to arrive before shooting, then posting phone photos of half-sold stock.
- Running a 'winter sale' poster with stock images of snow that looks nothing like Kichha or Haldwani.
- Posting winter and Diwali offers on the same day, so neither is clear.
- Keeping summer hours on Google long after the shutter starts coming down earlier.
- Advertising to everyone in the district instead of the area customers actually travel from.
Winter customers in the plains often shop in the afternoon and early evening. If you run ads, schedule them so the message is fresh when people are deciding where to go after work.
And keep your own words. A line like 'garma garam soup, 7 baje tak' in Hindi often reads better to local customers than a polished English caption.
07How does AMS plan a winter shoot around Diwali?
On the first call we ask two questions: when does your winter stock arrive, and when is your Diwali shoot? If the dates are close, we shoot both on one visit with two setups, so the crew comes once and the shop is disturbed once. If winter stock arrives late, we book a short shoot in the week after Bhai Dooj, before weddings fill the calendar.
Then we plan the edits so the winter reels are ready to post the day the page switches. The festival posts and the winter posts are cut in the same visual style, so the grid still looks like one business.
Advance Media Solution shoots, edits and runs pages for shops, cafes and hotels across Kumaon from Metropolis City. If you want your winter content planned before the festival rush, see Retail Marketing Agency in Rudrapur for Shops or call +91 91059 43909.
08Questions people ask
Can I combine my Diwali and winter shoot?
Yes, if your winter stock or menu is ready by mid-October. Plan two separate setups on the same day: festive lights and gift boxes in one corner, winter stock or dishes in another. You get two sets of content from one visit. If the stock is not in yet, wait for the week after Bhai Dooj instead of shooting empty shelves.
Should I run a winter sale or keep full prices?
That is a business decision only you can make, and it depends on stock and margins. From a marketing view, a clear reason to visit works better than a vague discount. New arrivals, a winter menu or a limited batch often pull people in without cutting prices. Save the sale for slower weeks in December or January.
Is winter a good time for a hill homestay to start posting?
It is late, but not too late. People plan December and New Year trips during November. Post real photos of the rooms, the view and the road, put booking on WhatsApp, and answer common questions in a pinned post. Remember that many guests check on slow mobile data, so keep it simple.
Do gyms need winter marketing?
Gyms and academies often find early mornings harder to fill once it gets cold. A winter batch timing, short reels of members training on cold mornings, and reminders on WhatsApp help keep regulars coming. Start in the second half of November, before the New Year rush of fresh joiners.
