Instagram lets you add tagged posts to your grid: what it means for a local business
On 10 September 2026 Instagram began rolling out Add to grid. When a customer tags your business in a post, you can show that post on your own profile grid without reposting it. It stays on the customer's account, and you can remove it any time. Real customer photos can now sit where visitors tend to look first.
Customers already photograph your business. The birthday cake at a Haldwani cafe, the bridal look from a salon, the new sofa outside a showroom. Some of them tag you. Until now, those posts sat in your Tagged tab, which, in our experience, few visitors open.
Instagram's new Add to grid changes where they can sit. Here is what that means for a cafe, restaurant, salon, gym, showroom, school or event in Kumaon, and how to use it with care.
01How do you add a tagged post to your Instagram grid?
Instagram has announced Add to grid, and the rollout began on 10 September 2026. Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, put it simply in a Reel: 'You can now add any photo or video that you're tagged in to your profile grid.' You do not repost anything. The original stays on the account that published it, and adding it does not delete or duplicate it.
There are three ways to do it:
- From the DM notification Instagram sends when someone tags you.
- From the three-dot menu on the tagged post itself.
- By pressing and holding a post in the Tagged tab on your profile.
The post then shows on your grid with a small tag icon in the top right of the thumbnail. That small icon marks it as a tagged post, though many visitors may not notice it. You can remove it at any time. That takes it off your grid only; the original and your Tagged tab stay as they were.
If you do not see it yet, update Instagram, then check those three places. New Instagram features can take time to reach every account. The reports also do not say whether every account type gets it, so check on your business profile itself. Not there yet? Start on getting tagged. That part works today.
02Who sees a tagged post once it is on your grid?
This is the part most owners will miss. According to Tech Times, Instagram does not copy the post. Your grid only points to the customer's original. Engadget and Tech Times both report that two sets of privacy settings decide who sees it: yours, and the original poster's.
If a customer's account is private, Tech Times says the post on your grid shows only to that customer's approved followers. Many of your followers will not be among them. If the account goes private after you add the post, followers who do not follow that customer may stop seeing it.
The same design has two more effects. Tech Times reports that engagement goes to the original post, on the customer's account, not yours. And Instagram warns you about visibility once, in a notice under the Add to grid button. After that, nothing on your grid tells you which posts some visitors cannot see.
None of this is a reason to panic. Nothing is copied or deleted, and removing it takes a second. Prefer posts from public accounts. Now and then, check your grid on the phone of a friend who does not follow the customer.
03Why does a customer's photo carry more weight than your own?
In AMS's view, this is the useful part of the update for a local business. In our experience, many people in Rudrapur and Haldwani check a profile on their phone before a first visit. They want to see whether the place is real, busy and worth the trip. A photo from a customer who paid and left happy says that without you asking.
It is social proof from a real person, with their name on it. A family's thali. A gym member after a morning session. A bride on her mehendi day. These used to sit in a tab many visitors skip. Now they can sit in the grid, between your menu post and your festival offer.
There is a limit. A customer's photo shows the experience, not the details. It will not tell a stranger your timings, your prices or which road you are on. That is still your job.
Treat tagged posts as proof between your own posts. According to Engadget, added posts go in newest first, but you can move them. So a good tagged post can sit beside the post it backs up. If your grid starts to look like someone else's feed, you have added too many. For what your own posts must carry, read Why your Instagram is not bringing customers (and what to fix first).
04How do you get customers to tag your business more often?
People tag what they are proud of and what is easy to tag. Make both happen at your counter. This is how we would set it up for a client.
- Give people one spot worth photographing: a wall with your name, a well-lit salon mirror, a window table for plated food, the festival display at the entrance.
- Put your exact Instagram handle where the phone already is: the bill, a table card, the carry bag, the gym mirror, the trial room.
- Ask at billing, once, in plain words: 'Photo li ho toh humein tag kar dijiye.' Staff can ask; it need not be the owner.
- Tell them how. The tag goes on a post or Reel, using Tag people, so it lands in your Tagged tab. A location tag or a Story mention does not do it. Stories vanish in a day and never reach the Tagged tab.
- Refresh the display each season: Navratri, Diwali, the wedding months, Christmas. A new backdrop gives regulars a reason to shoot again.
Think twice before offering a discount for tags. A photo taken for a discount often looks like one. Make the spot good and simply ask.
05Which tagged posts are worth adding to your grid?
Not every tag deserves a place. Your grid is what a stranger judges you by, so be choosy. Check each post against this table before you add it.
| Add it | Skip it |
|---|---|
| Your dish, product or service is clear in the frame | Your shop is a smudge in the background |
| The customer looks happy and relaxed | Someone looks uncomfortable or caught mid-bite |
| Daylight or good indoor light | Dark, grainy night shots |
| Sharp and in focus | Shaky, blurry or heavily filtered |
| A public account | A private account most of your followers cannot see |
| The menu, stock or look you offer now | A dish or collection you have dropped |
A few strong tagged posts beat a pile of weak ones. If in doubt, leave it in the Tagged tab.
06Do you need a customer's permission before adding their post?
The post belongs to the customer and stays on their account. But on your business profile it does a different job: their face now sells your shop. So ask first. A short DM is enough: 'Aapki photo bahut acchi hai. Kya hum ise apni profile pe dikha sakte hain?' It takes a minute and saves an awkward call later.
- Any photo with a customer's face: ask first, even if they tagged you.
- Children: ask the parent. Schools and coaching centres should add children's photos only within their own consent policy.
- Clinics and hospitals: never add patient photos, even ones patients post happily. Health is private, and a grid is public.
- Gyms: progress and before-and-after photos are personal. Ask every time.
- If anyone asks you to take a post down, remove it the same day, without argument.
07What should you do this week, and how will you know it is working?
A short list for the next seven days:
- Update Instagram and check whether Add to grid shows on a tagged post.
- Open your Tagged tab and pick the best posts from public accounts, using the checks above.
- DM those customers for permission, then add the ones who say yes.
- Choose your photo spot and fix its light.
- Print your handle on the bill or a table card, and brief the billing staff.
Then count. Likes on these posts go to the customer's account, so they tell you little. Watch what reaches you: DMs, calls, WhatsApp messages, and walk-ins who say 'Instagram pe dekha tha'. Ask every new customer how they found you, and note it for a month. If those numbers do not move, the tagged posts are decoration.

08Questions people ask
Can someone's post end up on my grid without my say?
No. A tag only puts the post in your Tagged tab. Nothing reaches your grid unless you add it yourself, from the DM, the post's menu or the Tagged tab. So a customer cannot place a photo on your profile just by tagging you. What sits on your grid is always your choice.
How is Add to grid different from a Collab post?
A Collab post needs an invite. The person who posted invites your account, either when posting or later by editing the post. Once you accept, one post is shared across both profiles. Add to grid needs no invite: you pick a post you are already tagged in. In our view, a Collab still suits a planned shoot with a food blogger. Add to grid suits photos customers post on their own.
Someone tagged my shop in a complaint. What should I do?
Do not add it to your grid. Reply once, politely, and move the talk to a call or WhatsApp. Do not argue in the comments. If the problem is real, fix it. If the post is abusive, remove your tag from it, so it leaves your Tagged tab.
