Google Ads or Facebook ads: which is better for a local business?
Use Google Ads when people already search for what you sell, like a dentist, a plumber or a school, because your ad appears at the moment they look. Use Facebook and Instagram ads when you must show people something they were not searching for, like a new cafe or a wedding collection. Many local businesses need one first, not both.
Every owner who decides to spend on ads hits the same fork. A cousin says Google is where serious customers are. A friend's cafe got busy from Instagram. Both are right, for different businesses.
The choice depends less on the platform and more on one question: is your customer already looking for you? Here is how to answer that for a shop, clinic, restaurant, school, builder or factory around Rudrapur and Haldwani.
01What is the real difference between Google Ads and Facebook ads?
Google Ads catch demand. Someone types 'child specialist near me' or 'AC repair Haldwani', and your ad shows at the top of the results. That person already has a need. Your job is to be there and be easy to call.
Facebook and Instagram ads create demand. Nobody searches for a cafe that opened last week. They are scrolling Reels, and your ad puts a steaming plate or a new lehenga in front of them. Your job is to stop the scroll and make them want it.
So the question is not which platform is better. It is whether people search for what you sell. If they do, start with Google. If they buy because they saw something, start with Meta. If you are not sure, search for your own service on your phone, in Hindi and in English, and see who shows up.
02Which one suits my type of business?
This is how we usually advise on the first call. It is a starting point, not a rule.
| Business | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clinic, dentist, physio, diagnostic lab | Patients search when they have a problem, often in a hurry | |
| Repairs, AC service, pest control, car care | Urgent need, and the call is the sale | |
| Cafe, restaurant, bakery | Facebook and Instagram | People choose food with their eyes, and a Reel shows it best |
| Clothing, sarees, jewellery, salons | Facebook and Instagram | Collections and looks sell visually, and festivals set the timing |
| Schools and coaching | Both, in admission season | Parents search, but a campus video builds trust |
| Builders and real estate | Both | Search catches serious buyers; video shows the project |
| SIDCUL factories and B2B suppliers | Google search | Buyers look for a product or process by name |
For a restaurant or a boutique, we lean towards the reel-led approach on our Facebook Ads Agency in Rudrapur | Meta Ads page. For a clinic, the Google side usually comes first.
03Is Google Ads worth it for a small business in a small town?
Often, yes, but with honest limits. In a town like Kichha or Gadarpur, fewer people search for any one service than in Delhi. That means fewer clicks, but also fewer competing ads. A well-set campaign can bring calls without a big budget.
Two settings matter more than most owners know. Both are explained in Google's own Ads Help pages.
- Location targeting. Google lets you target a radius around your business, with a minimum of 1 km. It also has an option called 'Presence or interest', which can show ads to people outside your area who show interest in it. For a clinic in Rudrapur, choose 'Presence' so you pay only for people actually nearby.
- Call assets. These put a call button under your ad on phones. For most local businesses, a call is the lead. Turn on call reporting so you can count calls as conversions.
The exception to the Presence rule is tourism. A Nainital homestay wants people in Delhi who are planning a trip to the hills. There, interest in the location is the whole point.
04Do I need a website to run Google Ads?
Not strictly for every campaign type, but in practice, yes. A Google search ad sends people somewhere, and your homepage is usually the wrong place. A patient searching for a root canal should land on a page about root canals, with your number and a WhatsApp button at the top.
That page must load fast on a mid-range phone on patchy data. In the hills and on the highway outside town, many people do not have strong 4G. A slow page wastes the click you paid for.
Facebook and Instagram ads are more forgiving. They can send people straight into WhatsApp or your DMs, with no website at all. That is one reason many local shops start there.
If your site is not ready for paid traffic, read What a local business website in Rudrapur or Haldwani actually needs (and what it does not) before spending on Google.
05What mistakes do owners make with each?
We see the same mistakes on both platforms, whoever set up the account.
- Boosting a post and calling it a campaign. A boost with no clear offer and no one answering the DMs mostly buys likes.
- Sending Google clicks to the homepage instead of a page for that service.
- Choosing broad keywords like 'doctor' and paying for people who wanted something else.
- Leaving 'Presence or interest' on for a local shop, and paying for clicks from other states.
- Running ads when nobody picks up the phone. Ads bring calls on Sunday afternoon too.
- Stopping after one week. Both platforms need time and data before you can judge.
- Splitting a small budget across both platforms, so neither gets enough to learn.
The last one is the most common. If money is tight, pick one platform, run it properly for a month, and then decide.
06How do I know which one is working?
Count what reaches you, not what the dashboard shows. Clicks and reach are the platform's numbers. Calls, WhatsApp messages, bookings and walk-ins are yours.
A simple habit works for most local businesses. Ask every new customer, 'Aapne humein kahan dekha?' Note the answer in a notebook or a shared sheet for a month. Split it into Google, Instagram or Facebook, a friend, or walking past. Then compare it with what you spent on each.
On Google, turn on call reporting so calls from the ad are counted. On Meta, count the DMs and WhatsApp chats that start from the ad, and how many became a visit or an order. If one platform brings enquiries that never buy, the ad or the targeting is wrong, not always the platform.
07How does AMS decide for a client?
Before we suggest any spend, we ask three things. Do people search for what you sell? Do you have content that makes people stop, like real photos or reels of your shop? And who answers the phone and WhatsApp when leads come in?
If people search and nobody has good content yet, we start with Google and a clean service page. If there is little search but the product looks good on camera, we shoot first and run Meta ads on the best reels. For many local brands, the order matters more than the platform. We have written about that in Reels or Facebook ads first? What a local business in Rudrapur should start with.
Advance Media Solution plans and runs Meta and Google ads, and shoots the content they need, for businesses across Udham Singh Nagar and Kumaon. If you want a straight answer for your business, call +91 91059 43909.
08Questions people ask
Can I run Google Ads without a Google Business Profile?
Yes, you can run search ads without one. But for a local business, the profile is where many people check your reviews, timings and location before they call. Linking it to Google Ads can show your address with the ad. Set it up and verify it first if you have not.
Should I run Google Ads myself or hire someone?
You can learn it, but it takes time most owners do not have. The common self-run mistakes are broad keywords, wrong location settings and no call tracking. If you do it yourself, start small, set location to Presence, and check the search terms report every week to block irrelevant searches.
Do Instagram ads and Facebook ads need separate budgets?
No. Both are run from the same Meta ad account, and one campaign can show on Instagram, Facebook or both. For most local businesses in Kumaon, Instagram Reels and Facebook together work better than either alone. You can see results by platform in the report afterwards.
Which one gives results faster?
Google can bring calls from the first days if people search for your service. Meta can also move quickly with a strong reel and a clear offer. Neither is instant, and no honest agency can promise a date. Give either one a proper month before judging.
