Guide
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps, and how do I fix it?
Common causes are a profile never claimed and verified, a duplicate listing, a wrong primary category, a pin off your door or a suspension. The fixes: verify, clear the duplicate, pick the most specific category, move the pin, appeal. Reviews, replies and photos can help you stand out. Showing only near the shop is distance, not a fault.
You type your shop's name into Google and get nothing. Or you search "sweet shop near me" and three competitors show up, but not you. Many customers in Rudrapur and Haldwani choose where to go from that screen.
Here are the common causes, how to spot each on your phone, and the fix. One thing first. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
01How do I check whether my business shows on Google Maps?
Do three searches before you change anything.
- Your business name plus your town, signed in to the Google Account that runs the profile. Google's help says searching your name and city, or "my business", brings up your profile.
- The same search in an incognito tab, or on a family member's phone. This is what a stranger sees.
- What a customer would type, such as "bakery near me" or "physiotherapist in Haldwani". Do it at your counter, then ask someone across town to try.
If the name search finds nothing, the problem is the profile itself. If the name works but the category search does not, you are visible but ranking low. Note which competitors sit above you and how many reviews each has.
02Which of these problems is yours?
Match what you saw to a line. A listing can have more than one. The sections below give the fixes.
- Nothing, even for your exact name: no profile, or it was never claimed and verified.
- Two listings, one with an old number: a duplicate from an earlier attempt.
- You show for your name, not for what you sell: a wrong or vague primary category.
- Customers get lost at the last turn: the pin sits on the main road or a society gate.
- You show at the shop, not from home: that is distance, not a fault.
- Customers find a different name or number on JustDial or Instagram: pick one version and copy it everywhere.
- Rivals with more stars sit above you: few reviews, no replies, no photos, stale hours.
- The listing vanished or shows a warning: a suspension, or Google treating it as a duplicate.
- No address and no directions button: the address is hidden, as for a service-area business.
03How do I verify my Google Business Profile and remove a duplicate?
Google's edit page says that to show on Search and Maps, you must add or claim your business, then verify it. Its ranking page is softer: a verified profile is more likely to show up. Google decides which verification methods you are offered, such as a call, SMS, email, video or postcard, and you cannot add others.
Check who set the profile up. If it was a relative, past manager or sign-up agent, ask them to add you as owner. Use a Google Account the business controls.
Then search your phone number. Two listings for the same business usually means a duplicate. Google says there should be only one profile per business, and a profile it treats as a duplicate won't show on Search or Maps. If you made the extra one by mistake, remove it from your account. If both are already on Maps, suggest a merge through Google Maps.
Moving to a new address means verifying again. If the profile is suspended, Google's appeals tool shows the reason and the policy. Appeal with documents that match the profile's name and address, such as a registration, licence, tax certificate or electricity bill.
04Why is my map pin in the wrong place?
In our experience, addresses here are hard for a map. In Metropolis City a block or tower number means little to Google. In SIDCUL and other industrial areas, a plot number can land the pin on the wrong road.
Check it like a customer. Search your name, tap Directions, and see where the route ends. If it stops at the highway, the main gate or a neighbour's plot, fix it.
- Move the pin onto your door. Google says that if your address has no street number, or the system cannot find it, you can pin the location on the map.
- Add a landmark only where the official address does not pinpoint you. Google allows that, and in our experience, around here it often does not.
- Drop a pin on your door in Google Maps and copy the plus code from its details. Google says a plus code can mark one entrance of a building. Put it in your WhatsApp replies.
The other address problem is a hidden one. Google says a business that travels to customers should hide its address. That suits an AC repair service, not a shop or clinic that wants walk-ins. If you do both, show the storefront and add a service area.
05Why do competitors show above me when I search?
Google lists three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. You can work on two of them.
- Distance is how far the business is from the person searching. Someone in Kichha searching "mobile shop" will likely see Kichha shops before yours in Rudrapur. That is not a fault.
- Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Complete, detailed information helps, and the first category you pick is your primary one. Google says to use as few as possible, pick ones that finish "This business IS a", and not use them just as keywords.
- Prominence is how well known you are. Google says it draws on things like how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have. More reviews and positive ratings can help.
So ask customers for a review. In your profile, open Read reviews, then Get more reviews, and copy the link. Send it in the WhatsApp message after delivery, in the customer's language: "Aapko hamari service kaisi lagi? Ek minute nikaal kar Google par review de dijiye." For the counter, print the QR code, which Google only makes on a computer.
Ask everyone, not only happy customers. Do not press anyone to review on the spot or tell them what to write. Google's Maps policy rules out all three. Reply to every review, good or bad. Add real photos, including the shop front. Google notes an exterior photo helps customers recognise you when they arrive.
06Do my name, number and hours need to match everywhere?
We think so, though Google's own rule is narrower. Say the board shows one name, JustDial another, and the Instagram bio still has the number from two phones ago.
Google's guidelines ask for your real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website and stationery. Google also uses information from other sources to decide how to show your address. Open your Google profile, Instagram bio, JustDial listing and website footer side by side, and make the name, phone and address identical. The website side is in What a local business website in Rudrapur or Haldwani actually needs (and what it does not).
Then hours. Google lets you set special hours for holidays. Set them before Dussehra, Diwali and Bhai Dooj. If Maps says open and the shutter is down, the customer blames you, not Google.
While you are in Edit profile, look under Contact for Chat. In select regions, a verified profile can add WhatsApp there. If you add both WhatsApp and text message, only text message shows, so add WhatsApp alone if that is where orders come.
07Which Google Maps shortcuts should I avoid?
Most of these go against Google's own rules, and the last one cannot work.
- Do not add keywords or a town to the name. "Best Sweet Shop Rudrapur" is not your name. Google says unnecessary information in the name could get the profile suspended.
- Do not buy reviews, or trade a discount or freebie for one. Google's Maps policy bans paid reviews, incentives, and reviews from several accounts at one person's request.
- Do not create a second listing to start fresh. Google wants one profile per business, and no new one while an appeal is under review.
- Do not use a virtual office or a PO box. The profile must be for your actual, real-world location.
- Do not pay anyone who promises the top spot in the free results. Google says local ranking cannot be requested or bought.
Nobody can guarantee where you will rank. What you control is a correct, complete and honest profile.
08What order should I fix things in?
Work down this page in order: search, owner, duplicates, category, pin, matching details, hours, reviews. The first few decide whether customers can find you and reach your door. The rest help you stand out. Do the first five before the Dussehra and Diwali rush.
None of it is a trick. It is housekeeping, done once properly and then kept up. You can see our own Advance Media Solution listing, and what clients wrote, in our Google reviews.

09Questions people ask
What happens if I change my business name on Google?
Google allows a name edit only for a minor change. The proper nouns, the services in the name and the category must stay the same. If the business takes a genuinely new name, Google treats it as a new business: mark the old profile closed and create a new one. Even an allowed edit after verification can mean verifying again. Either way, use the name exactly as it appears on your board and stationery.
Can I run my business from home and still show on Google Maps?
Yes. If customers come to your home, for tuition or a home clinic, show the address. Keep a permanent board with the business name there. If you only travel to customers, Google treats you as a service-area business. Hide the home address and list the areas you serve, which Google says should generally stay within about 2 hours of driving.
Do Google posts help my business rank on Maps?
Google's page on local ranking does not list posts as a factor. It names complete information, verification, hours, reviews, replies and photos. Posts can still help a customer: a profile updated this week suggests the shop is open and cared for.
Should my agency or an employee own my Google Business Profile?
No. Keep yourself as owner, on a Google Account the business controls, and add others as managers. Google says managers can edit details, reply to reviews and post, but cannot add or remove users or delete the profile. If someone leaves, you remove them.
