Meta removed placement choices from most ads: what a local advertiser should check

By October 2026, Meta had removed the option to choose or exclude placements inside the ad set for Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion campaigns. Meta's system now decides where those ads appear. Local advertisers should check where their leads and chats really come from, set account-level exclusions, and make every ad work in every format.

Until this year, anyone running Facebook and Instagram ads could open the ad set and untick the places they did not want. Many owners in Haldwani and Rudrapur did exactly that. They kept their WhatsApp ads to the Instagram feed and Reels, and switched off the corners that sent junk leads.

That switch is now gone for most campaign types. Here is what changed, what it means for a shop, clinic or coaching centre running small local ads, what to check this week, and what not to worry about.

01What exactly did Meta change, and when?

In August 2026, Social Media Today reported that some advertisers were seeing an alert inside Ads Manager. It said the Placements option was being removed from ad sets. The examples given were placements such as Facebook search results and in-stream ads between Reels.

On 12 October 2026, Social Media Today reported that the removal had happened for four objectives: Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales. Campaigns using the Awareness and Traffic objectives still have placement controls, for now. Meta's Business Help Centre now carries a page titled "What's new in placement settings in Meta Ads Manager".

Meta's reason is that its system needs more room to show ads wherever they are likely to perform best. In practice, for these four objectives, you choose the goal, the audience and the budget. Meta chooses whether your ad runs in the Instagram feed, Stories, Reels, Facebook, Messenger or elsewhere.

02Which local ads does this touch?

Most small local campaigns sit under exactly the objectives that changed. A quick way to check yours:

ObjectiveTypical local usePlacement choice in the ad set
EngagementWhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram chat ads, video viewsRemoved, Meta decides
LeadsLead forms for admissions, property, clinics, test drivesRemoved, Meta decides
SalesOrders on a website or online storeRemoved, Meta decides
TrafficVisits to a website or profileStill available, for now
AwarenessReach around the shop before a sale or openingStill available, for now

Chat ads that open WhatsApp can be built under more than one objective, depending on how they were set up. Open the campaign and look at the objective name at the top. That tells you which row you are in.

03What does Meta offer instead?

According to Social Media Today's report of Meta's guidance, there are four tools that replace the old checkboxes:

  • Media customisation: upload several images and videos in one ad and set how each appears in each placement, including size, text and link.
  • Placement value rules: in Meta's words, you can "adjust bids up or down for specific ad placements based on their relative value to your business goals."
  • Account-level exclusions: placement exclusions set by objective in the ad account's controls, rather than inside each ad set.
  • Partnership ads: when you run ads with a creator or another business, you can limit the partnership to certain placements.

In AMS's view, the account-level exclusion is the one most local advertisers should look at first. The value rule is useful but works on price. It tells Meta how much a placement is worth to you. Media customisation matters for everyone, because your ad will now appear in sizes you never planned for.

04What should I check this week?

If you run your own ads, these five checks take under an hour. We run the same list on every client account when a platform change like this lands.

  • Open each running campaign and note its objective. Anything under Engagement, Leads or Sales is now on automatic placements.
  • In the reports, break results down by placement. Look at where the leads and chats came from over the last two weeks, not just the total.
  • Find the account-level placement controls in your ad account settings. If one placement keeps sending junk, exclude it there.
  • Check that every ad has a vertical version for Reels and Stories and a square or 4:5 version for the feed. Cropped text and cut-off faces waste money.
  • If your ad sends people to a website, decide on product browsing before 28 October. More on that below.

Write down what you change and the date. If results move in the next fortnight, you will know why.

05Why do lead quality and reply speed matter more now?

When an advertiser could switch placements off, junk leads were often fixed by unticking a box. That fix is no longer available for lead and chat campaigns. So the filter has to move into the ad, the form and the follow-up.

This is what we tell clients on the first call:

  • Make the ad say who it is for and what it costs to start, so the wrong people scroll past.
  • On lead forms, choose the higher intent option and add one question only a real buyer can answer, such as class, budget or area.
  • For WhatsApp chat ads, set a first message that asks something specific, not just "Hi".
  • Reply within minutes during shop hours, in Hindi if the customer writes in Hindi.
  • Track in a simple sheet which leads turned into visits, not just how many came in.

A coaching centre in Haldwani or a property dealer in Kichha judges an ad by the people who walk in. Build the campaign so you can see that number.

06Is anything else changing on 28 October?

Yes, for ads that send people to a website. PPC Land reported on 15 October that Meta had told advertisers it will add product browsing to existing Facebook and Instagram ads from 28 October 2026, unless they opt out.

With product browsing on, a tap on your ad may first open a page inside Facebook or Instagram with product details and suggestions, before your own website. According to the notice, advertisers can opt out with a button before 28 October. After that, it can be turned on or off for each ad in the Advantage+ creative and Destination settings.

This mostly matters to online labels and stores. A Rudrapur clothing brand selling through its own site should test both versions and compare orders, not clicks. If your ads open WhatsApp or a lead form, this change does not touch you. The notice does not say whether new ads will start with the feature on, so check each new ad as you publish it.

07What should I not panic about?

This change is about where your ad appears, not who sees it. Your location radius, age range and audience settings work as before. A sweet shop's ad aimed at Rudrapur and Kichha still goes to people in Rudrapur and Kichha.

Awareness and Traffic campaigns keep their placement choices for now. Reels you already have still work, as long as they read well in every size. And a strong reel with a clear offer still matters more than any setting. We cover that order of priorities in Reels or Facebook ads first? What a local business in Rudrapur should start with and the difference between the Boost button and Ads Manager in Should I boost my Instagram post or run ads from Ads Manager?.

If you would rather have someone else watch the placements, the forms and the replies, that is the work we do at Advance Media Solution. See Facebook Ads Agency in Rudrapur | Meta Ads or call +91 91059 43909. If you run your own ads, the five checks above are a good place to start.

08Questions people ask

Can I still stop my ads showing on Audience Network or Facebook search?

Not inside the ad set for Sales, Leads, Engagement or App promotion campaigns. Look for placement exclusions in your ad account's controls, which Meta still offers by objective. Awareness and Traffic campaigns still have the old placement checkboxes for now, though Social Media Today expects that to change eventually.

Will this make my ads more expensive?

Nobody can say for your account in advance. Meta says the change lets its system show ads where they are likely to perform best. In our experience the real cost to watch is cost per genuine enquiry, not cost per lead. Compare the two weeks before and after, using enquiries that turned into calls or visits.

Do boosted posts change too?

The reports cover Ads Manager campaign objectives, not the Boost button. Boosts already make most choices for you. If you boost, keep the area tight and choose messages or profile visits as the goal. Check the results by placement in the boost insights if your app shows them.

Should I switch my campaigns to Traffic to keep placement control?

Only if traffic is genuinely what you want. Traffic optimises for clicks, not chats or leads. Switching a WhatsApp or lead campaign to Traffic just to keep the checkboxes usually brings cheaper clicks and fewer real enquiries. Fix the ad and the form first.
