Guide
How do I get more travellers to stop at my highway dhaba near Rudrapur?
Travellers choose a dhaba before they reach it, usually on Google Maps or from a reel they saw. Make sure your listing shows the right pin, hours, real food, clean toilets and parking. Post short reels of the kitchen and the thali, ask happy guests for reviews, and keep the highway board readable at speed.
The roads around Rudrapur carry every kind of hungry traveller. Families driving up to Nainital and the hills for a winter weekend. Wedding parties in three cars. Truck drivers on the Bareilly side. SIDCUL staff heading home late. Most of them will stop once, and they will choose in a few minutes.
That choice used to be made by the board and the number of trucks parked outside. Now someone in the passenger seat opens Google Maps or Instagram while the driver keeps going. If your dhaba does not look good on that phone, the car passes you.
01How do travellers decide where to stop on the highway?
A family on the road is not looking for the best food in the district. They want a safe, clean stop that will not waste their time. In our experience shooting for restaurants, these are the questions behind that quick search:
- Is it on our side of the road, and is it coming up soon?
- Are the toilets clean enough for the women and children with us?
- Is there parking for a car, a tempo traveller or a bus?
- Pure veg, or veg and non-veg kept separate?
- Is there a family hall, or only open seating by the road?
- Is it open at the hour we will pass, including late at night?
- What do other travellers say about the food and the bill?
Notice how little of this is about taste. Taste brings people back and makes them recommend you. Toilets, parking and honest reviews get them through the gate the first time.
02What should my dhaba's Google Maps listing show?
AMS does not manage Google listings, but we tell every restaurant client the same things on the first call. This is an evening's work for the owner or the manager:
- The pin on the correct side of the highway, at the gate, not at your house behind it.
- Real opening hours, including late nights and festival days.
- A phone number that someone actually answers during service.
- Photos of the entrance as seen from the road, the parking, the family hall and the washrooms.
- Food photos of what people really order: the thali, dal, tandoori roti, paratha and chai.
- A menu with prices, so nobody fears a surprise bill.
Then reply to reviews, good and bad, in the language the guest used. If your dhaba does not show up at all, our guide at Why is my business not showing on Google Maps, and how do I fix it? walks through the usual causes.
03What reels work for a highway dhaba?
Reels do two jobs for a dhaba. They reach families in Rudrapur, Haldwani and Kichha who drive out for a weekend meal. And they reassure the traveller who taps through from Maps to your Instagram.
| Reel | What it tells the traveller | How to shoot it |
|---|---|---|
| The tandoor at rush hour | Fresh food, busy kitchen | Close, steady, real sound, no music over it |
| Building the thali | What they get and how much | Top-down, one dish at a time, price on screen |
| The washrooms and family hall | Safe for women and children | A calm walk-through after cleaning, in daylight |
| Parking with cars and buses | Easy to stop, groups welcome | Wide shot from the road side |
| The owner on camera | Who is behind the food | Short, in Hindi, about one dish or one rule |
| Night shot of the board and lights | Open late, easy to spot | From a parked car, at the speed people see it |
We filmed a presenter-led reel at Kartar's Dhaba for Kartar's Haveli, along with kitchen close-ups for the menu. The work is at the Kartar's Haveli case study. What we learnt there applies to any dhaba: show the food being made, not only served.
04Should a dhaba run Instagram or Facebook ads?
Ads cannot easily find a traveller who will pass you in two hours. They work better for the customers you can predict.
- Families within a short drive who come out for Sunday lunch or a winter dinner.
- Groups booking a birthday, a kitty party or a small function in your hall.
- Office teams from the SIDCUL estate looking for a year-end lunch.
- Wedding families who need a place for the baraat to eat on the way.
Keep the area tight and use your best reel as the ad, usually the tandoor or the thali. Send people to WhatsApp or a call, not to a page they have to read. Judge the spend on bookings and footfall, not likes. Our Facebook Ads Agency in Rudrapur | Meta Ads page explains how we run small local budgets.
05How do I get travellers to come back and recommend me?
A highway dhaba lives on repeat travellers. The family that goes to the hills every winter. The taxi driver who brings tourists from Kathgodam and Delhi every week. Make it easy for both to remember you.
- Put a review QR code at the billing counter and ask in person, after a good meal, not before the bill.
- Print your WhatsApp number on the bill for party orders and advance booking.
- Treat drivers well: a clean place to rest, a fair meal and a quick service window.
- Save the numbers of tour operators and taxi stands in Haldwani and nearby towns, and send them your menu once a season.
Never buy reviews or offer a discount in exchange for five stars. Platforms remove them, and travellers can tell when every review sounds the same.
06What mistakes do highway dhabas make online?
- A Maps pin that sends cars into the wrong lane or a back gully.
- Food photos from the internet that do not match the plate.
- No photo of the washrooms, which is exactly what families want to see.
- Hours that say open when the kitchen is closed.
- Arguing with an angry reviewer instead of fixing the complaint.
- An Instagram page that stopped posting two winters ago.
The fix for most of these is not money. It is one person who owns the dhaba's phone presence and checks it every week, the same way someone checks the gas and the tandoor.
07How does AMS help restaurants and dhabas?
Advance Media Solution is a seven-person studio in Metropolis City, Rudrapur. We have worked with Kartar's Haveli, Sidhu Restaurant, The Royal Bite, City of Joy and other food businesses across the district.
For a dhaba we usually start with one shoot during a busy service, so the kitchen, the crowd and the food are real. Then we post, reply to comments and messages, and run small ads where they make sense. More on how we work with food businesses is on Restaurant Marketing Agency in Rudrapur & Kumaon. Retainers start from ₹35,000 a month plus GST.
If you run a dhaba on the highway and want more cars to stop, call +91 91059 43909. Or start tonight: photograph your washrooms and your parking, and put them on your listing.
08Questions people ask
Should a dhaba show prices on Instagram and Google?
Yes, at least for the thali and the dishes people order most. Travellers fear a surprise bill more than a high one. A clear price list on your listing and in a pinned post builds trust, and it saves your staff from answering the same question on the phone all evening.
Does a highway dhaba need a website?
Not to start. A correct Maps listing, an active Instagram page and a WhatsApp number do most of the work. A simple website helps later if you take party bookings, run a banquet hall or cater weddings, because families want to see the hall, the menu options and the address in one place.
Should our reels be in Hindi or English?
Mostly Hindi, with short English captions. Your travellers come from across Uttarakhand, UP and Delhi, and Hindi reaches almost all of them. Put the dish name and price on screen so the reel works with the sound off. There is more on choosing a language at Should my business reels be in Hindi, English or Hinglish?.
What should I do about a bad review on Google?
Reply the same day, politely and specifically. Thank them, say what you have fixed, and invite them back. Do not argue in public. The next family reads your reply more closely than the complaint, and a calm answer often wins the stop the bad review would have cost you.
