Google now shows ads in AI Mode in India: what should a local advertiser do?

On 28 October 2026 Google said ads in AI Mode are expanding to India and nine other countries. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically, in English. You cannot opt out separately. This week, check your search terms report, tighten negative keywords, and make sure your ad and landing page answer longer questions.

Most owners in Kumaon who run Google Ads set them up for short searches. Physiotherapist near me. Furniture shop Haldwani. Website designer Rudrapur. That is still how most people search. But more people now ask Google a full question in AI Mode, and get a written answer instead of a list of links.

Until this week, those answers carried no ads in India. Now they can. Here is what Google announced, what it means for a small local budget, and what to check before you change anything.

01What exactly did Google announce?

On 28 October 2026, Shashi Thakur, who leads Search ads at Google, wrote on Google's blog that ads in AI Mode are expanding to new markets. India is on the list, along with Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom are due later this quarter.

Google's help page for advertisers adds the details that matter:

  • Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically. No new campaign or separate budget is needed.
  • Text ads and Shopping ads can appear, marked 'Sponsored'.
  • For now it works in English only.
  • You cannot opt out of AI Mode or AI Overviews separately from Search, and you cannot target them on their own.
  • Results are added into your normal campaign reports, not shown as a separate line.

Google also launched 'multiturn' ads in the US, which can show on follow-up questions in the same conversation. That part is US only for now.

02Who does this affect in Udham Singh Nagar and Kumaon?

Anyone running a Search, Shopping or Performance Max campaign in India. That includes a clinic in Haldwani bidding on back pain treatment, a coaching centre bidding on NEET coaching, and a D2C label running Shopping ads across India.

If you only run Facebook and Instagram ads, nothing changes for you. If you run no ads at all, this does not touch you either. Your free listing on Google is a separate matter.

The bigger change is in the kind of search. Google's post says AI Mode questions are, on average, much longer than normal searches, based on its US data. A parent might ask which CBSE schools near Kichha run a bus from Shaktifarm and have an English-medium nursery. A typed search would just be CBSE school Kichha. Your ad may now be matched to the first kind of question too.

03Will my ads show in AI Mode with exact or phrase match keywords?

This is the most useful line on Google's help page. AI-powered targeting can match your ad to both the question and the AI answer around it. That means AI Max for Search, broad match, Shopping and Performance Max. Exact and phrase match keywords only serve when the question shows direct commercial intent. They do not match broader, exploratory questions.

Your setupWhat to expect in AI ModeWhat to watch
Exact and phrase match SearchShows only on clearly commercial questionsLittle change, but check search terms anyway
Broad match or AI Max for SearchCan match long questions and the AI answerSpend on loosely related questions
Performance MaxEligible automaticallyWhere the money goes, and brand exclusions
ShoppingProduct ads can appear in answersTitles, prices and stock must be right

For most small local advertisers, the second row is the one to watch. Broad match on a tight daily budget can now find many more questions to spend on.

04What should I do this week?

None of this needs a rebuild. It needs an hour with your account:

  • Open the search terms report for the last month. Open it again next week and compare.
  • Add negative keywords for questions you never want to pay for: jobs, free, course, DIY, and towns you do not serve.
  • If you use broad match on a small budget, compare cost per call or enquiry before and after this week. Decide on numbers, not on fear.
  • Read your ad as if it were an answer. Does it say what you do, where, and for whom, in plain words?
  • Check the page the ad opens. It should answer the follow-up question: price range, timings, location, how to book.
  • Make sure call and WhatsApp tracking still work, so you know which enquiries came from ads.
  • If you run Shopping ads, fix product titles, prices and stock in Merchant Center.

Most of our clients' customers search in Hindi or Hinglish. Google's page says English only, so those searches are untouched for now.

05Do I need a new campaign or a bigger budget for AI Mode?

No. Google says existing campaigns are eligible and no separate budget is needed. In AMS's view, the risk for a small advertiser is not missing out. It is the same daily budget being spread across more, looser questions. If your budget is limited, the job is to protect it, not to chase the new placement.

Our post on Google Ads now lets you put Search ahead of Display: what should a local advertiser do? explains another recent setting that decides where a small Search budget goes. The two changes are worth checking together.

Remember that the report will not show AI Mode as its own line. Google adds those impressions, clicks and conversions into your normal campaign totals. The questions themselves do show in the search terms report, so that is where you will see the change first.

06What does it mean for my ad text and landing page?

A question in AI Mode is usually a full sentence with conditions. Which physiotherapist in Haldwani does home visits for elderly patients? If your ad and page answer that clearly, the click is worth paying for. If the page is a slow homepage with a slider, you pay for the click and lose the person.

A good landing page for a local business answers:

  • What you do, in one line, in the words customers use.
  • Where you are, with a map link and a landmark.
  • A starting price or a price range.
  • Timings, and whether you do home visits, delivery or site visits.
  • One clear action: call, WhatsApp or book.
  • Real photos of your place and your team.

Most people here open that page on a mid-range phone, often on patchy data. It has to load fast. Our Website Design & Development in Rudrapur page explains how we build pages like this. Business websites start from ₹50,000 plus GST.

07What should I not panic about?

  • Your free listing on Google has not gone anywhere. This change is about paid ads.
  • Hindi and Hinglish questions are not part of it yet.
  • You do not need to rebuild your account. Most of the work is search terms and negatives.
  • Google's claim about click rates in AI Mode comes from US data. Judge your own account on calls and enquiries.

At Advance Media Solution we run Google Ads for local businesses from our studio in Metropolis City, and the first thing we open on any account is the search terms report. If you want a second pair of eyes on yours, see Google Ads Agency in Rudrapur for Local Search & Calls or call +91 91059 43909. Either way, spend ten minutes in that report this week.

08Questions people ask

What is Google AI Mode?

AI Mode is a way of searching on Google where you ask a full question and get a written answer with links, then ask follow-up questions. It sits alongside the normal results. Ads that appear in it are marked 'Sponsored', so a customer can tell them apart from the answer.

Can I stop my ads from appearing in AI Mode?

Not separately. Google's help page says you cannot opt out of AI Overviews or AI Mode on their own, or target them on their own. Negative keywords and brand exclusions are the controls you have. Exact and phrase match keywords serve only on questions with clear commercial intent, which keeps things tighter.

Will this make my clicks more expensive?

Nobody can say yet for a local account, and Google has not said. Watch your cost per call or enquiry for the next few weeks, not cost per click alone. If it rises and the enquiries are poor, tighten negatives and match types before you cut the budget.

Does this matter if I only run Instagram and Facebook ads?

No. This change is only for Google Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns. If Meta ads are working for you, carry on. If you are deciding between the two, our post at Google Ads or Facebook ads: which is better for a local business? compares them for a local business.
