Google Search ads in India now carry AI review summaries: what should you do?

Google can now add a short, AI-written summary of your online reviews to your Search ads. It is positive only, you cannot edit it, and it shows only when Google predicts it will help the ad. India is eligible, in English. So what customers write about you is becoming part of your ad. Read it, and earn better reviews.

Google has published a help page called "About Review summaries" for Google Ads. It explains that Search ads can now carry a line of commentary drawn from your online reviews. Search Engine Roundtable reported on 26 October 2026 that these summaries have been showing in ads for some time, and this is the first official page on them.

If you run Google Search ads for a shop, restaurant, school or showroom in Rudrapur or Haldwani, this is about you. Here is what changed, what it means, and what to do before the Diwali ads go live.

01What exactly did Google announce?

The Google Ads help page describes review summaries as "AI-powered summaries of online reviews that appear directly as part of your Search ads." The key points from the page:

  • They are positive only. The page says they highlight "benefits from customer reviews".
  • Advertisers "cannot directly edit or customize the generated text".
  • Google shows them only "when it's predicted to improve ad performance".
  • They apply to Search campaigns, on all devices, in all ad positions on Google.com.
  • They are available in English in the US, Australia, the UK and India.
  • All business types are eligible except sensitive categories, such as pharmaceuticals.

Search Engine Roundtable adds that Google's AI pulls reviews from across the web, not only from your Google listing. The help page gives no launch date and does not describe a switch to turn summaries on or off.

02What does this mean for a business in Rudrapur or Haldwani?

Until now, your ad said what you wrote. Now Google may add a line about what your customers wrote. A sweet shop's ad might carry a note that buyers like the fresh stock. A coaching centre's ad might mention patient teachers.

That only helps if your reviews say something specific. Many local businesses have a handful of old reviews that say "good" or "nice service". There is little there for a summary to work with.

In AMS's view, the businesses that gain are the ones whose customers already write proper reviews. They describe the product, the staff, the delivery, the parking. Those details become free ad copy.

Language matters too. The help page lists English only. Many customers in Kumaon write reviews in Hindi or Hinglish. We do not know yet whether those reviews feed the summary, so do not assume they do.

03What should I do this week?

You do not need to change your campaign settings. You need to look at what your customers have written. A short list:

  • Search your business name on Google on your phone and read your last 20 reviews like a stranger would.
  • Check the other places people review you, such as food apps, Facebook and directories.
  • Note what praise repeats. That is roughly what a summary could say.
  • Reply to every recent review, good and bad, in plain words.
  • Make sure your ad text and landing page talk about the same strengths your reviews mention.
  • Start asking happy customers for a review, with a direct link on WhatsApp after the sale.

Ask in a way that gets detail. "Please tell others what you bought and how it was" works better than "please give us five stars".

04How do I get reviews that actually say something?

Most owners ask for reviews at the wrong moment. The best time is right after a good experience: the cake is cut, the sofa is delivered, the result is out.

BusinessGood moment to askWhat to prompt them to mention
Restaurant or cafeWhen the bill is paid and they are smilingThe dish they liked, the service, family seating
ShowroomA day after delivery or fittingRange, price clarity, delivery and setup
School or coachingAfter a result or a parents' meetingTeachers, communication, facilities
Service businessWhen the job is checked and doneTime taken, cleanliness, staff behaviour

Never buy reviews or write them yourself. Never offer a discount in exchange for five stars. Google removes fake reviews, and a summary built on them would mislead the very people you are paying to reach.

05Can I turn review summaries off or edit them?

Not according to the help page. It says advertisers cannot edit or customise the text, and it does not describe an opt-out. Google decides when to show a summary, based on whether it predicts the ad will do better.

The page also says summaries are only positive. So a bad review will not appear as a complaint inside your ad. That does not make bad reviews harmless. People still read them on your listing, and an unanswered one-star review next to a polished ad looks worse than no ad at all.

What you control is the raw material: the service, the follow-up, the replies and the reviews you ask for. That is where to spend your time.

06What should I not panic about?

  • You still write your own headlines and descriptions. The summary is an addition, not a replacement.
  • It is not a new charge. Nothing on the page suggests you pay extra for it.
  • It will not show on every ad. Google says it appears only when predicted to help.
  • Your Google listing has not changed. This is about ads, not the free Maps listing.

If you do not run Google Search ads at all, nothing changes for you today. The advice on reviews still holds, because people read them before they call or visit.

If you do run ads, keep doing what works: a clear offer, a tight area around your shop and a fast page or call button. Our post Google Ads or Facebook ads: which is better for a local business? explains when Google Search ads make sense for a local business at all.

07How does AMS handle this for clients?

Advance Media Solution runs Google and Meta ads for businesses across Udham Singh Nagar and Kumaon. With this change, the first thing we check on a new Google Ads account is the reviews, before the keywords. We read them, note what customers praise, and write the ad and landing page around the same points.

We do not manage Google listings or reviews as a service. We do tell clients when their reviews are too thin to support paid search, and we help them build a simple ask-for-review habit on WhatsApp.

08Questions people ask

Do review summaries only use my Google reviews?

Search Engine Roundtable reports that Google's AI pulls online reviews from across the web. The help page talks about online reviews in general and does not list sources. So check every place customers review you, including food apps, Facebook and directories, not only your Google listing.

Will a bad review show up in my ad?

Google's help page says review summaries are only positive, highlighting benefits from customer reviews. So a complaint should not appear inside the ad. But the complaint still sits on your listing, where buyers read it. Reply calmly, say what you have fixed, and move on.

Do I need to change anything in my Google Ads account?

The help page does not describe a setting to turn summaries on. It says they apply to Search campaigns and show when Google predicts they will help. Your work is outside the account: better reviews, replies, and ad text that matches what customers already say about you.

Does this apply to clinics and pharmacies?

The help page excludes sensitive categories, giving pharmaceuticals as an example. It does not list every category. If you run a clinic, pharmacy or health business, assume the summaries may not show for you, and focus on clear, honest ad text and replies to patient reviews.
