Kharmas 2026: what should jewellers, banquet halls and builders post while weddings pause?

Kharmas runs from 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027, and many Hindu families avoid weddings, engagements and griha pravesh in that month. Do not go silent. Push the last muhurats before 12 December, then use the pause to shoot, take bookings for January and February weddings, and be ready from 15 January.

Every December, the wedding rush stops within a few days. Banquet halls go quiet, jewellers see fewer families, and builders find that nobody wants a griha pravesh until after Makar Sankranti. Many owners in Kumaon treat the month as a holiday for their marketing too.

That is a mistake. The families getting married in late January and February are choosing their venue, jeweller and photographer during exactly this month. Here is a dated plan from now to mid-January.

01When is Kharmas in 2026?

Kharmas, also written Khar Maas, begins when the sun enters Dhanu, or Sagittarius. Hindupad lists Dhanu Khar Maas from 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027, ending on Makar Sankranti. Drik Panchang also lists Dhanu Sankranti on 16 December 2026.

In this period, many astrologers advise avoiding major ceremonies such as weddings, engagements, griha pravesh and mundan. Families follow this to different degrees, so check with your own customers.

On the calendar, it sits like this:

  • Winter wedding window: roughly 21 November to 12 December 2026, on one widely used muhurat list.
  • Kharmas: 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027.
  • Lohri and Uttarayani: 13 and 14 January 2027.
  • Next window: one Delhi muhurat calendar lists its first 2027 wedding date on 15 January.

Dates vary by panchang and region. Ask customers to confirm theirs with the family pandit. Your job is to be ready, not to set the muhurat.

02Who should plan for Kharmas?

Any business whose sales depend on weddings or new beginnings:

  • Jewellers and bridal wear shops.
  • Banquet halls, resorts, caterers, tent houses and decorators.
  • Wedding photographers, makeup artists and salons.
  • Builders and property dealers, since many families wait to take possession or do griha pravesh.
  • Furniture and appliance showrooms that sell to new homes and wedding families.

Not everyone pauses. Udham Singh Nagar has many Sikh, Punjabi and Bengali families who do not follow Kharmas, and Christmas, New Year and Lohri parties carry on. So do not post as if the whole town has stopped. Shift the message, keep the presence.

03What should I do between now and 15 December?

The weeks before Kharmas are your last big push of the year. Work back from 16 December:

WhenWhat to do
Now to 8 NovemberDiwali first. Book a shoot day for the second half of November.
9 November to 12 DecemberRun wedding season content and ads. Film real weddings and handovers, with permission.
From late NovemberPost open dates for January and February. Families are already asking.
1 to 12 DecemberLast muhurat reminders. Builders: possession before Kharmas, if the family wants it.
13 to 15 DecemberPost a season recap reel. Thank families publicly, with their permission.

Our wedding plan at Wedding season 2026: a marketing plan for jewellers, salons and banquet halls in Kumaon covers the November and December weeks in detail.

04What should I post during Kharmas?

The pause is when families plan, compare and book. Your posts should help them do that, not push them to buy today:

  • Jewellers: the new bridal range, how to choose a set, old gold exchange explained, booking for January orders.
  • Banquet halls: a walk-through of the hall and lawns, menu tasting slots, open dates in January and February.
  • Photographers and salons: the best of the season, a bridal trial offer, what to book and when.
  • Builders: site progress, finished flats, a home loan explainer from your bank partner, possession dates after Sankranti.
  • All of them: Christmas, New Year and Lohri posts for the families who celebrate.

Banquet halls and resorts can also sell the events that do happen in this month: birthday parties, kitty parties, corporate year-end dinners and New Year nights.

Keep the tone respectful. Do not make jokes about Kharmas or pressure families to break a custom.

05Is Kharmas a good time to shoot?

It is the best time of the year to shoot, for most wedding businesses. Your staff have time, the hall is empty, the showroom can be rearranged, and the winter light in the plains is soft.

What we suggest clients shoot in the second half of December:

  • The bridal or new collection, piece by piece, for the January and February window.
  • The venue dressed for a wedding, without guests, so you have clean footage for ads.
  • The owner on camera, answering the questions families ask on their first visit.
  • A booking explainer: how to reserve a date, what the advance is, what is included.

A single shoot day here can carry your content to March. Book it early, because good crews are busy until 12 December. Our Videographer in Rudrapur for Brands & Events page shows how we plan shoot days.

06What should I do from 1 January to 15 January?

The new window opens fast, so prepare in the first two weeks of January:

  • 1 to 7 January: post New Year greetings, then switch the feed back to weddings.
  • From about 5 January: start ads on your best new reel for the January and February dates.
  • 10 to 12 January: Lohri and Uttarayani creative ready and approved.
  • 13 and 14 January: post Lohri and Uttarayani wishes. Keep them simple.
  • From 15 January: open-date reminders, bookings and real wedding coverage again.

For builders, the days after Makar Sankranti are when families who waited may book possession or griha pravesh. Have a reel ready that says the flats are ready to move into. Our Real Estate Marketing Agency in Rudrapur for Builders page covers how we market projects through the year.

07How does AMS plan around Kharmas?

Advance Media Solution is a seven-person studio in Rudrapur. For wedding businesses, we plan the year in windows, not months. We shoot during the pause, and post and run ads in the windows. For Kartar's Haveli, we shot weddings in the banquet hall live, and built the account to 7,000+ followers from zero.

On the first call, we ask three things. Which wedding dates matter to your customers, what you sell outside them, and what footage you already have. Then the Kharmas month becomes a shoot and booking month, not a dead one.

If you want this planned and shot for you, call +91 91059 43909. Even if you do it yourself, book your December shoot day this week.

08Questions people ask

Should I stop running ads during Kharmas?

Not completely. Lower the budget for ads that ask people to buy now, and keep a smaller campaign running for bookings and visits. Families still compare venues and jewellers in this month. If you switch off entirely, you may find that families have already booked elsewhere by mid-January.

Is it okay to run a Kharmas sale?

Be careful. A discount on wedding jewellery or a venue during Kharmas can look like pressure to ignore a custom. A booking offer for later dates is safer, such as a benefit for families who book a January or February date now. Keep the wording respectful and avoid making fun of beliefs.

Do Sikh and Punjabi families also pause weddings in December?

Customs differ from family to family, and we would not generalise. Many families in Udham Singh Nagar do not follow Kharmas, and some weddings do happen in this period. Ask your own customers, and keep your posts welcoming to everyone you serve.

Can I post wedding photos during Kharmas?

Yes. Posting the season's weddings, with the families' permission, is exactly what people planning their own wedding want to see. It is the ceremony that families avoid in this month, not looking at other weddings. A recap of your best work is one of the strongest posts you can make in December.
