Should I hire a freelancer or an agency for my social media in Rudrapur?

Hire a freelancer when you need one skill, such as editing or posting, and you can give clear direction and check the work yourself. Hire an agency when you need planning, shooting, editing, posting, ads and replies handled together, with cover when someone is ill or leaves. Either way, the business must own every account.

Most businesses in Rudrapur start the same way. A nephew runs the Instagram page, or a college student edits reels on weekends for a small fee. It works for a while. Then exams come, or a job in Delhi, and the page goes quiet in the middle of the wedding season.

So the owner asks: should I find a better freelancer, or pay an agency? We are an agency, so read this with that in mind. But a freelancer is genuinely the right answer for some businesses, and we will say which.

01What does each option actually give you?

There are really three options, not two. Here is how they compare on the things that matter to a local business:

WhatFreelancerAgencyYour own staff member
Who plans the monthUsually youThe agency, with youYou, or nobody
Who shootsSometimes, if they own the kitA shoot teamStaff on a phone
Who editsUsually yesDedicated editorsRarely well
AdsSome can, many cannotUsually included or offeredRarely
Cover when someone is awayNoneAnother team memberNone

Best forOne clear taskThe whole jobDaily stories and replies

None of these is wrong. The question is how much of the work you want off your plate, and how much risk you can take if one person disappears.

02When is a freelancer the right choice?

A freelancer works well when the job is narrow and you are willing to manage it. Choose one if:

  • You already shoot decent videos on your phone and only need someone to edit them.
  • You need a logo, a menu card or a one-time set of festival posts.
  • Your budget is small and you are still testing whether social media brings customers.
  • You enjoy planning content and want someone to execute your ideas, not suggest new ones.
  • You have a reliable person you can meet, who has shown you work for other local businesses.

A good local freelancer can be excellent. The best ones are honest about what they do not do, such as ads or shooting at your shop. Pay them on time, give clear briefs, and keep the accounts in your name.

03When does an agency make more sense?

An agency makes sense when the work needs several skills at once, or when consistency matters more than cost. That is usually when:

  • You need regular shoots at your shop, showroom, clinic or restaurant, not just edits.
  • You want ads run alongside the content, by the same people who made it.
  • Your busy seasons, such as Diwali, weddings or admissions, need extra output at short notice.
  • Nobody in the business has time to plan, brief and check the work every week.
  • You want someone accountable for enquiries, not just for posts.

Seasons are where single-person setups break. In Dhanteras week, one freelancer may be booked by three shops in Rudrapur and Kichha at once. An agency with a shoot team and separate editors can usually spread the load. For Kartar's Haveli, AMS built 7,000+ followers from a standing start, with a brand film, kitchen and dining content on rotation, and a podcast cut down for social. You can read how at the Kartar's Haveli case study.

04What goes wrong most often, with either one?

We hear about the same problems from owners who come to us, and they cut both ways.

With freelancers, the usual problems are:

  • The page, ad account or website is in the freelancer's name, and they stop replying.
  • Work stops for exams, weddings in the family or a new job.
  • The same templates appear on five other local pages.
  • There is no one to run ads or answer the DMs.

With agencies, the usual problems are:

  • The senior person sells, and a junior with no context runs the account.
  • Nobody ever comes to shoot, so the feed fills with stock photos and greetings.
  • Reports show reach and likes, never calls or walk-ins.
  • A long lock-in contract, with no clear list of what the fee covers.

Ask about each of these before you sign with anyone.

05How much does each cost?

We will not quote other people's prices, because they vary widely and change often. What we can say is how to compare fairly.

Do not compare a freelancer's fee for editing with an agency's fee for planning, shooting, editing, posting and ads. Compare the full job. Add the hours you or your staff spend briefing, checking and fixing. Add the cost of the page going quiet for a month.

AMS's marketing retainers start at ₹35,000 a month plus GST. Ad spend is paid separately, straight to Meta or Google. What moves the fee up or down is explained at Digital Marketing Packages in Rudrapur from ₹35,000.

If a freelancer at a lower fee covers what you actually need, that may be the better choice for now.

06What should I settle before hiring either one?

Whoever you choose, settle these in writing, even on WhatsApp:

  • The business owns the Instagram, Facebook, ad account, domain and website. The hire gets access, not ownership.
  • What is included each month: shoot days, reels, posts, stories, ads, replies.
  • Who answers DMs and comments, and within what hours.
  • How you will see results: calls, chats, visits, not just likes.
  • What happens to the files and access if you part ways.

Never hand over your Instagram password. Give access through Meta's business tools instead. We explain how in Should I give my Instagram password to a marketing agency?. For a longer list of questions to ask an agency, see How to choose a digital marketing agency in Rudrapur: 10 questions to ask.

07Can I mix a freelancer, staff and an agency?

Yes, and many businesses should. A common mix that works: a staff member posts daily stories and answers DMs, because they know the stock and the customers. An agency handles the monthly shoot, the edited reels and the ads.

Another mix: you shoot on your phone, a freelancer edits, and you boost the posts that do well. That suits a small shop that is just starting.

Mr. Aryan Aggarwal, Senior Partner at Vim Developers, put it this way: "They do not just create content; they build trust. Since the launch of our new website and social strategy, the quality of our walk-in leads has shifted completely."

08Questions people ask

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?

Usually the monthly fee is lower, but the comparison is rarely like for like. A freelancer often covers editing or posting, while an agency covers planning, shooting, editing, ads and replies. Count your own hours spent briefing and checking, and the cost of a quiet month, before deciding.

Can a freelancer run my Facebook and Instagram ads?

Some can, and some do it well. Ask to see a campaign they ran for a local business, and what it brought in calls or chats. Make sure the ad account is in your business's name, with you as admin, and that the freelancer only has partner access.

How do I switch from a freelancer to an agency without losing my page?

First, check that you are the admin of the Instagram account, Facebook Page and ad account, and that the recovery email and phone are yours. Download the raw files of past shoots. Then remove the freelancer's access politely and give the agency partner access through Meta's business tools.

Should my agency be in Rudrapur, or can it be anywhere?

For a business that needs regular shoots, being close matters. An agency nearby can come to your shop at short notice, before a sale or an event. For editing-only work or ads, location matters less, as long as they understand your customers and their language.
